1881 O OVER POLISHED REVERSE VAM 1J
Here is my 1881 O PCGSMS62PL over polished vam 1J.
Not a rear vam, but I thought it was pretty cool and found this PL example, while back.
Here are a lot of pictures.
Enjoy, Bert

I have multiple 16 coins, too, and they are gorgeous just like Bert's 1J.
Supposedly they are different - and I am still looking for a 1J. I believe subtle PUPs are the only way to tell the difference but I honestly struggle to see them clearly. Perhaps b/c these damned coins are SO shiny (mine are PL or DMPL).
Thanks, Bert, for posting such lovely pictures!

Re: 1881 O OVER POLISHED REVERSE VAM 1J
That looks like VAM 16 from the mint mark location. It's always PL on both sides, so the reverse die failure came immediately. The reverse was swapped out to become VAM 28.3, which is common. VAM 16 is decidedly not common.

Re: 1881 O OVER POLISHED REVERSE VAM 1J
THANK YOU EVERYONE!
Sorry it took me so long to wake up and realize my 1881 O is a VAM 16, not 1J.
Living with a bad case of Attention Deficit Disorder, among some mild learning disabilities
all of my life.
I wondered why I couldn't see all of those lines, on the wing, near the side of breast feathers,
like the first picture below, from the vam 1J page and then a picture of my wing. (second pic)
So mine is a vam 16.
Here are some pictures of the doubling in the lips, chin and on the 1, in the date.
Plus the O mint mark.
I also took a couple of pictures of the obv and rev, with my camera, to try and show the nice
dark gold rim toning.
THANK YOU ALL, again, Bert

THREE MORE PICTURES
I had noticed the diagonal line running, from the bottom of the chin, down to the top-front of the neck.

Re: 1881 O OVER POLISHED REVERSE VAM 1J
I really don't like to confuse things, but I'm confused.
@bhinkle and @messydesk, aren't the wing scratches shown in the picture "SS34543U.jpg" identical to the ones shown on the 1J page - and not found on the 16?
I've searched my 16 with key PUPs that match the 16 page (included below) but a coin that I can't for the life of me find the scratches.
Am I reading my coin incorrectly? Or isn't yours more likely a 1J, Bert, based on the cumulative stuff you're seeing?
Gary
First are the obverse PUPs:
Nice crack and metal textural changes along the IBU (also seen on the VAM-28.3 coins):

And the reverse PUPs showing it clearly to be a 16:
Bert, the bow on yours seems clear - lacking the scratch that @Mhomei's DC clearly shows - so my coin may simply lack the shoulder scratches that yours shows (and happens to be on the 1J page).

Re: 1881 O OVER POLISHED REVERSE VAM 1J
Hey Gary,
( I wondered why I couldn't see all of those lines, on the wing, near the side of breast feathers,
like the first picture below, from the vam 1J page and then a picture of my wing. (second pic)
So mine is a vam 16.)
Above on my post, I was trying to say, that when I thought I had a vam 1J and that I couldn't see
all of those lines, like on the vam 1J page, that I couldn't understand why.
Then when I looked at the vam 16 page and the doubled lips, chin and the 1, in the date, I knew
mine was a vam 16, thanks to everyone commenting on it and saying they thought mine was a
vam 16, which don't have those wing lines.
I copied the picture, from the vam 1J page and posted it, along with my 1881 O vam 16, without the lines.

Re: 1881 O OVER POLISHED REVERSE VAM 1J
Confusion solved! Thanks... I have lost my mind already but for a while there I thought I was losing what little I had left.
You rock, my friend. Thanks again.
