Help with 1922-D VAM designation

Post by wags1990 » Thu Mar 23, 2023 4:16 am

I can’t seem to find a VAM that describes the 1922-D Peace dollar I have. It has lines on both left and right side on obverse. PEACE has a line through it. There is a die crack to the left of 1 in date, and there is a huge die chunk in front of forehead of lady Liberty.
Any help in determining VAM is appreciated.

Looks like VAM 2P1.

That VAM just has the one die line on the left obverse. Mine has a line on the left and right, and also a die break through PEACE and something on the forehead. So to me it can’t be that.

iI'd agree with JB here that it's a 2P1; possible 2P2 but it'd need to have the raised break near the 1 to be that. Crack on the right side is shown in part on the 2P2 page so perhaps the lighting and angle of your photos simply hid the raised break at the date digit?

I'm out of my element with Peace dollars, but I'm trying to learn. Well, not trying that hard... ;)

Sure looks like a 2P1 to me. But, what the heck is this?

 very well could be a 2P2, @wags1990 could we get a close up of the break near 1 in date as well as a close up of the nose bridge? Interesting

Exactly! Yes the 2P1 has the due break on the left like mine has. But what about forehead and pine through PEACE? And the line on the right?

@wags1990 as you call lines, they are Die Cracks" and if you look at the VAM Page for 1922 D 2P2, all these die cracks are present on the Full Coin Photo. The crack at PEACE on the reverse is present. The crack at Y on obverse is present as well. If you could get a close up of the crack left of 1 in date, we could confirm it's a 2P2. I'm intrigued by the mark at the nose bridge area. Could you get a good close up of that area? Hope this helps and welcome to VAMWorld! :D

Thank you. And I posted a close up of nose area as well. I’ll look at 2P2.

From here, the bit by the forehead looks like nasty machine doubling. I think I also see it on Liberty's upper lip.

Agreed. I think it’s doubling as well and it is evident all along face and into nose and lips if at the right angle.
With that said, do you think I’d get a new designation on this VAM? Or should I just call it a 2P2 and call it a day?

Yup, I agree @messydesk JB, MD, and your right, looks nasty  . Wags, this is Machine Doubling and not Die Doubling. It's cool but not a listable attribute. (It's pretty common)
I still think it's 2P2 although the break at 1 isn't as developed as the one picture on the VAM page from what I can see. Maybe @davidkclose could give us a little insight. It's weird cause the crack thru Y and PEACE look more developed than on the VAM page. (Hope that made sense.) Maybe a tweener
Happy Hunting Wags!

I agree with those above calling this a VAM 2P1, albeit a later die state than the full coin photo on the corresponding VAMworld page. The die break on 2P2 is in the upper right corner of the rectangular die break left of date, of which I see no sign on this coin.
Hope this is helpful.

Agreed on 2P1. So the die crack on right side and through PEACE and the doubling on face are just bonus marks on a 2P1. I thought maybe there was a different designation because of the extra attributes on the coin. But maybe not?

This reverse die is the EDS of VAM 20A, in which the obverse die of VAM 2P was replaced with one w/ a doubled die. All VAM 2P's have this die crack on reverse.
