1886 O VAM?

Post by lhnumis1 » Sat Mar 18, 2023 1:52 am

The 1886 O CIH imaged below exhibits a ‘normal’ set date with a high 6. It also exhibits a mint mark set upright, slightly high & slightly left. The likely VAM appears to be VAM8. It is difficult to verify VAM8, as it has no images on its webpage with which to compare the CIH. Additional images in the follow-up post. Any thoughts, comments, etc…? All most welcome.

Only 3 choices to chose from: 2, 8 or 16.

Clearly not the 2 nor the 16.

Unfortunately, there were no pictures of the 8 online - until NOW! I've just scanned the 'big book' and official plate photo and added it to the webpage so you can see it.

I'd say according to this you have an 8. The other PUPs are not likely enough to warrant this as any different and, yes, including the potential double arrow heads. I saw the same on my 86-P VAM-1P but this was 'in addition to' the lines in the upper loop of the 6, not separate from it...

Just a friendly reminder that info from the "big book" is copyrighted. Unless things have changed, we are not supposed to scan and post images from the copyrighted material.

Maybe the administrator can clarify or expand.

Ah, my apologies! If this is the case I'll delete any I've uploaded.

Thanks to fogie, DHalladay, keilg1 & LateDateMorganGuy for responding.

It appears that VAM8 is the correct attribution. I would be completely satisfied if it could be established that the strong raised diagonal line between the cotton bolls or the doubled arrowheads (or of course both) could be confirmed as markers on VAM8 in addition to the mintmark position.

Thanks again to all who responded…very much appreciate your taking the time to help.
