My own 78-S head scratcher I need help with (please)

Post by keilg1 » Thu Mar 16, 2023 5:50 pm

Engraved wing feather area doesn't match up to what my poor eyes can see on the guide page (http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... ther_GUIDE) and I looked under the B2 guide (http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... _Varieties) under the "4th Star Broken, r in trust Unbroken with Doubled Liberty" section with (obvious) failure. 'B' of PLURIBUS is notched/broken but the coin largely lacks other features.

Any postulations by aficionados (or others who hate this year and mint due to the variability of minting standards) warmly welcomed.

I think you have hit the jackpot.
Looks like a VAM-112 to me.

Lew, you're always a gentleman and a scholar.

Might, indeed, be a 112 by the reverse, but the obv PUPs are difficult to pick up - but what I see in the ear is a 110 match? I'll share what few photos I've been able to get and hopefully share more this weekend. Will defo look at the UN(UM) and forehead when I can.

Thanks in advance,

Gary

On the obverse:

Three upper and two (non-parallel) lower scratches look like the 110 picture:

Hair D area looks to be clear with a chip off to the right (also like the 110) - I'll share this in the next batch.

On the reverse:

Almost the linchpin? die scratch eagle's lower right wing:

Can't easily make out the S(TAT) gouge but it is there in the right lighting - and the scratch lines that can be seen look similar to the 112 page picture:

Other potential fun bits. Don't believe them to be PMD but can't rule that possibility out.

Need to have tbconcrete check out his MS61 V-110.
I don't have a V 110 to check.

I should have checked my notes because there is some interesting info about the V-112.
Back in November of last year Clay Christiansen said that he believes the V-112m and V-88 have the same obverse.
Maybe Clay will notice this topic and give his opinion.

My coin is still raw and struck through. I have a handful of coins I need to get graded. Should fill some holes in my 78S Set.
