1900-O VAM-21D1 or 21D2 or...?

Post by TMK » Tue Mar 14, 2023 7:37 pm

Hi folks, I need some help again.

Please see the following PCGS TrueView (https://www.pcgs.com/cert/45782846). I initially thought this was a VAM-23C (with a REV die break crossing UNITED and ATES). When looking at it more closely though, the REV die break on this coin actually follows a different pattern than that of the VAM-23C images I’ve been able to locate. Close, but not the same – there are numerous places it does not match up.

So I went looking for other die break VAMs. The VAM21D1/2 die break follows mine more closely, for example just beginning to see the formation of a chip in the E and where it will ultimately begin to the left of the T.

More importantly, the OBV of this coin exhibits a die break under the date. Not as pronounced as a VAM-29A or VAM35A, but definitely a die break. This coin does not exhibit any clashing. It appears to follow the pattern in the OBV photos associated with the VAM21D1 and VAM21D2 listings.

Should I conclude that this is a VAM21D1 or a VAM21D2?

Thanks in advance!

I would say 21D1. Matches the die breaks and the O mintmark is tilted slightly left.

It's the 21D1 because the date is not slanted and the die chip has not formed in the "E" yet. But the other attributes are there.

The major difference between VAM21 and VAM 23 is the near slanted date on the VAM 23. just ignore the date position on the 23C as Leroy once told me and you will be fine.
