1921-P Morgan gunk vam

Post by UNCLE BINGO » Sun Mar 12, 2023 4:57 am

Not sure what this stuff stuck to the crevices is or why it is on this coin . I can probably get the right Vam number , it has enough cracks it should not be all that tough even with the very long lists associated with 1921's, at least I hope so.

My first fear the first time I saw it was putty , but it seems random and stupid where it is placed to have been doctored and that does not make any sense anyway on this year . It almost looks to me like modeling clay , maybe someone attempting to make a casting , once again that make no sense for this year .... Has anyone every seen something like this on a Morgan dollar and maybe you could venture a guess, and fill me in ???. is this some cleaning thing I have never heard of or some weird something else????

I shall await a response as I ponder the dreaded acetone bath for her ,,, hoping very much it is not C4 explosives because she would surely explode

All comments are welcome and thank you in advance....

Looks like a gunky VAM 71 from here.
Hope she cleans up well!

Acetone soak and toothpick would be my first strategy.
When in doubt... don't.

Thank you both very much !
I soaked it all night long , no stick required , this time anyway
Victory is mine sort of , what ever it was must have been all over the obverse and seems to have effected the lustre a little .
The reverse surface is still factory for the most part .
Apologies for the cell phone pictures , I've either got to get my DSLR fixed or get a new cell phone ,
I'm just hard on stuff , out of two cell phones .I have managed to
destroy both screens and the camera lens cover on one of them . :?
V71 does seem to fit the bill , matches the die crack pattern the closest ,
Thanks again !
