Checkmark mystery
OK, so I know what it is, but do any of you recognize this? It's listed for another feature or two

Re: Checkmark mystery
I believe I might. Is it a 80-P VAM-44?

Re: Checkmark mystery
If it isn't a V44, my next guess is a 80-P VAM-21/21A
Re: Checkmark mystery
I feel like we need to play 20 questions...
1. Can I see the whole date.
2. Is it 63 or higher? (I feel like 64, but)
or it's a 44? LOL Nothing to see here, move along.

The bit VAM8?
Re: Checkmark mystery
Nope, the first guess was spot on. 80 Philly VAM 44. All the attention goes to the eye, which is understandable. Not sure I noticed the clear checkmark on this until I was shooting pictures for my next column a couple of days ago.

Re: Checkmark mystery
They are VERY hard to find! I've managed to find somewhere around 80 to 85 percent of the listed 80-P VAM's and I've found this is one of the toughest to find. These make V33A's seem easy to find.
Re: Checkmark mystery
If anybody is interested in the checkmarks on the 80-P V21/21A, I can try and find some of the photos I took. I have a small collection of that show the checkmark. I was saving them to send to LVA along with the V44 to see about getting them listed as checkmarks.

Re: Checkmark mystery
Are those super images actually a Hi-Def 3D scans? the overall focus depth is incredible and it appears you can rotate on all axis...
When it's no longer fun, I think I'm done!
Re: Checkmark mystery
Thanks everybody for the compliments on the photos! Now I wish I would have done a little cropping and post processing before I posted them but I just wanted to get them posted asap. It has been a few years since I took those photos so I can't 100% remember what I did to take them but I think I used a Nikon D7500 camera and probably a lens from scanner used to scan 35mm negatives. I'm sure I used my Stackshot and Heliconsoft Focus to render the photos and the 3D model which you can rotate. I'm looking forward to reading JR's column on the V44. It really is a underappreciated VAM in my opinion.
Re: Checkmark mystery
1. Totally agreed with everyone else... your pics are superb.
2. Totally agreed with you, 80p V44 is mighty tough. I felt blessed to have one (bought from another member here).
3. I know the person listed as the discoverer of V44. I've asked him (in person) a few years ago, and he said he knows nothing about V44. So, I'm not sure if the info listed him as the discoverer accurate or not.

Re: Checkmark mystery
The revised listing is now official and notes the checkmark.
Thanks for the heads up about the reported discoverer possibly being inaccurate. I'll leave his name out of the column. I haven't written it yet but it will be in Coin World towards the end of April.
And a special thank you to @Brickie Your coin and excellent images served as a conclusive second specimen that clearly showed the checkmark.

Remarkable pictures.
I have some unattributed 1880 Morgan's.
I doubt if I could see the checkmark,
I will look for the doubled eye and go from there.
Very interesting post, Bert
