1896-P 14?

Post by SilverToken » Sun Mar 05, 2023 1:47 pm

As there are no pictures and only a definition...

"Obverse III2 14 - 6 doubled above top loop as a dot on left and curved line joining top of loop and doubled slightly at bottom outside of lower loop"

Does this fit the bill... has a dot on left ?

I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to the 1896-Ps so I will let the more knowledgeable answer your question. But i'll pitch in my 2 cents, to me it just doesn't fit the description given for a VAM-14 sense the dot on the 6 appears to be PMD to me and in the photos the six doesn't appear to have doubling. But I could be wrong the photos just aren't clear enough for me personally to accurately make an assumption.

Hi all,

Here's the plate photo from the 1991 big book:

I'm wondering if the description got amended along the way because the original reads:

"6 in date doubled just above top outside of upper loop as a dot on left and thin curved line joining top of loop and doubled slightly at bottom outside of lower loop."

We might want to go back to the original and include at least this picture on the VAM page?

Sorry this doesn't answer your question directly - but my inclination is to say 'no' as your date digit doesn't match up?

OH, and when LVA used the abbreviation "O" it meant 'obverse' not 'New Orleans.'

Thanks for the helpful responses. I have been experimenting with lenses lately and wasn't happy with detail loss on that configuration.

The "big book" looks like a big help. I have noticed on some LVA plates they appear to have been printed on 3 hole paper and scanned but the work was phenomenal.

I will keep loosing vision on this one and find it.

I added the official plate photo and corrected the description to match the original.

Still unsure if I see doubling on the bottom of the 6 on your coin - so might be another one. I can keep checking the big book and adding additional pictures if the variety pages are blank...

Not sure if this crack will help, but here it is.
