Is there a way to....?

Post by MarkyB » Sat Mar 04, 2023 10:46 pm

Reactivate or fix a broken link to a thread? I picked up a 78 8TF today and its a 14.1A. The links to discussion of this VAM are broke and I'd really really like to read them. Am I SOL?

hmmmm I searched the key words on this forum to no avail , you may possibly be looking for something from the first Vamworld forum. Might want to confirm that with one of the founding members for sure .... there use to be a way that I cant remember right now to retrieve old wiped out message board pages ... Its like looking for shadows from the past on the internet. I am gonna have to research a very old data base to try and remember how we use to do it . What kind of message board was this before Php?

They may be VamWorld1.0 links - which I believe are not easily retrieved?

Yes, these are broken links to discussions that are from the VAMWorld 1.0 forum webpages.

They all have been archived according to JB, but not yet incorporated into 2.0. It's a tremendous task to do that and probably a future project for distributed work by date and mintmark from volunteers similar to the reposting of better quality LVA photos.

I feel your pain however in the loss of accessible information. Quality tidbits of information that can confirm attributions are always helpful to advancing the hobby.

I get it. These things happen when you change servers or formats. I dont criticize anyones motives or abilities but only wish someone would make a decision as to whether or not these type links will be restored, and if not, delete the references to them. I have no idea who has the administrative access to the old database or the knowledge to make it happen. Appreciate the feedback.

What would you like to know? Many of us have decent knowledge of 1878 VAMs.

The 14 VAM is extensive. Is it laid out in order of progession thru the various dies? My 1878 8TF double eye does not look like my 1887 VAM 12 Alligator Eye yet both are considered doubled. Maybe it was discussed. My tail feathers don't match the VAM 14; either side. Why? Different reverse probably but I want to read the discussion that may have happened. What is this "always match the beak" that Messydesk recently mentioned in another post? I searched the entire VamWorld website for a 1878 "beak guide" yet didn't find it. I could go on and on but the past discussions help fill in holes for us newbies. Information from the past should not be lost because others move on, pass away, or links don't work. Thanks for asking mark.
