1896-P with die scratches

Post by SilverToken » Fri Mar 03, 2023 3:10 am

Looking for some help. 1896-P, normal date. Reverse is covered in die scratches across both wings. Eyelid has small lashes, some scratches to cheek.
No apparent date doubling but there seems to be a mm O above the 8 & 9

Please point me in the right direction, cause I aint seein it!

Thanks in advance

For a second I thought the obverse could be some die state of V26 ,,, no guess for the back of it ,it's too bad Andy did not take LFCP of all of them , cause you may have found a match the first time through ,,, good luck!

It's there. Look at the higher numbers and use that lively wing-neck gap as a guide.

Now just volunteer the pictures of the die scratches /polish lines in the wings for the page ,,, the discovery coin LFCP is missing from the VW pages ...like they say a picture is worth a thousand words ... man you are on roll this week

Si. That 9 was hiding a little something. I certainly missed it.

The wing neck gap looks right as well for the V38. Good catch "Jody from GA" :D )

I took this as more an 'all-seeing eye' via a stain PUP because if this is a 'mm O' it would be the most micro-O of micro-O mm's ever produced!

Not only do our eyes play tricks with us but the coins play tricks with us?!

Thanks All.

I got this coin 6 months ago while searching for that 2nd 96-P 4B. Seems I'm always a day late but nice to know there are discoveries about still, and Jody got the cred.

Believe I found a V-14 but there are no pics so that will go up next for review.

Still think this looks like a O mint mark!

I have a few Ikes with that O and a dot in the middle and in random areas. I've been told its similar to what a die punch would look like.

Illusion... and why I study the brain. This schtuff fascinates me.

Impossible to have the MM in that area of the coin if it was transferred somehow - clashing would be the only plausible explanation - and transfer would put it on the top of the obverse, not the bottom near the date.

Besides, transfer that sized 'O' onto a real mintmark O and you'll see it doesn't even cover the topmost portion of the real mark - it is that small... again, the most micro-O of the micro-Os and not real.

Minus the triangle, this still looks like:

I agree completely.. Lighting, time of day, vision, and most importantly the mental want to find adds up to fun!

I noticed there are no full coin images on the V38 VAM Page. Here they are from the discovery coin.
@PacificWR could you drop these photos onto the page?
Thanks in advance!
