Re: Attribution 101 page question
I believe I have some explaining to do...
I was not familiar with the DPIS system and wanted to give it a try with @UNCLE BINGO as my mentor.
I grabbed a photograph of a Morgan date; cropped the photo to show just the base crossbar of the 'ONE' and the denticles underneath.
I posted this and then realized my mistake. You need that point of the neck for reference in the photo; as JR pointed out. Soo,
I quickly switched out that photo for another Morgan (not the same coin) that showed the date & a neck point. I cropped it and posted.
I didn't even consider the whole coin when picking this new example.
I am learning about DPIS now!
Thanks for your patience on this.

@Geseas
Here G use this one , the VW page calls it out on the cusp of normal and far . John Roberts DPIS would narrow that down to like placing the right side of the 1 at the start of the the fifth denticle and the left side at 3/4 the way through the the 3rd. RH3LE5 I think that is what it is anyway.... I can do it, if I don't think about it ... not near as speculative as the MM guide lines to me . ....Biggest question is there any MPD on this one ? Because it makes putting the right VAM number on it pretty easy . Coin is 1885-S in XF 45 PCGS , preliminarily calling it Vam 8 based on the answer about the possible MPD ... and not sure you ever stop learning doing this cause there are so many VAM's already and still new ones to be found .

You got it - RH3LE5. Gets relatively simple with a little practice.

Thanks , no, its easy if you sound it out , I still have to look at the page provided to write it down correctly . not real sure if i get the MPD however . Any thoughts on that ?

Re: Attribution 101 page question
Yeah, you can make out the top of an 8 in the denticle spaces under the second 8. There's probably the top of another 8 under the first. These were most likely deliberate marks. Their purpose is speculative. My best guess is they were a 'softness' test on a batch of dies between hubbings. But the point is MPD's exist for multiple dates and series. I think 1908 is the latest date reported, then they just stop.

Re: Attribution 101 page question
Thank you!.... I was unsure . It has the rest of the markers as best as a xf45 can for Vam 8 ... I was hoping for vam 9 but the MM won't make the cut ... trouble with online pictures , even GC auctions I guess .....

Re: Attribution 101 page question
Thanks you guys for getting me on the right path again. I think the DPIS will prove to be a great tool. Maybe think about putting it into the Definitions page with a link? Just a thought.
