1885 P Cracks or Breaks?

Post by ShamShield » Wed Feb 15, 2023 9:32 pm

Looking over this 1885 P it has alot of die cracks or die breaks. Which one would these qualify under? The crack/break through the P in Pluribus goes through thr crown, cap and into the field rlbehingld the cap. The one through the 1 goes through the hair. Also it's a far date but I can't place the VAM and are these patterns due to the metal or the process? Thank you for the help / clarification.

Looks like a 9 E to me. Mitch should be able to tell the difference.

Yes, VAM 9E. The smashed die you see is far more interesting than the clashed die on this one.

i didn't see anyone else say it so;

the lines west of the E in the pic above really look like PLS, someone for some reason wiping the coin enough to cause minor damage and i've seen a fair amount of otherwise lovely coins get detailed for small patches like that.

there is a fingerprint in the area of the S and dot in one of the images above.

Those larger “bumps” likely won’t make it. “ Break” requires naked eye visible displacement. Historically anyway…
Those would prolly be called cracks

@ShamShield Thank you and everyone else too, for this thread , I will check tomorrow for the confirming die markers etc , but I am thinking this might be the easiest one so far for me to find a number for because i did not even have to look at the VW pages , just your posts. ......see attached, different coin Vam not confirmed yet , but thanks just the same .///Bob
