guess the grade! -- revealed

Post by DHalladay » Tue Feb 14, 2023 12:28 am

Seller's auction photos shown.
Two-part guessing game here:

1. Guess what grade the certified holder says.
2. Say what your grade is.

Interesting ... photo grade vs market grade ?????
One of my favorite stories comes from the red book , when the secretary gets the closest out of all the prominent men doing this kind of thing

The grading game is just that, a game. I send in coins for regrades all the time because people get it wrong at the grading services just like in life.

In terms of a technical grade, it would be 63 with the strong mark on the face.

In terms of a market grade, because it has frosty cheek luster, they probably 64’d it. PCGS is all about original surfaces and luster.

That said, I’ve seen uglier 65s (which is sad).

I also say, I don’t like the difference between the look of the obverse and reverse, and I’d be keen to look for problems like microfiber cloth wiping on the reverse or what have you.

I remember about 15 years ago one of the veterans on this forum showed us all a relatively big money coin in a 64 holder at the LB show that would’ve been overgraded at 62. Preferred customer grading service? 😉

Here's the reveal.
No it's not my coin; I just found it when going through eBay sales results.

The $640 question is what does that mark on the cheek look like in hand? Is it a scuff or toning? First reaction is scuff, but you can't be sure from a single picture. The similar colored and shaped bit in the right obverse fields is not a scuff. The fields look very clean. It does seem overgraded at 67, though.

Dang that's off! :o :o

The pics are strange.

In the first Obv shot , the ear and hair above the earlobe appear to be flattened and in the "reveal" shot, the same earlobe looks nice and full while the hair remains flat.

I could be wrong, because of the lighting. Are the two obverses shown the same coin?
I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

Typical, but you do have to keep an eye on those ICG holders, I've had a few straight crossers and even had an ICG64 fall into an NGC64+ holder (and it was on an 80P v9).
I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?
