1885-P VAM-??

Post by andywoj00 » Fri Feb 03, 2023 10:35 pm

Need some input on this one. I wanna say 1G, but die cracks are off. There is a tick on the neck for letter transfer.
Any advice is appreciated....Andy

Thanks for the reply.
Probably not the 1A2 as the pitting has to be there, clash line at neck and reverse n don't match along with other markers. Markers for the 4A aren't there either.
The hunt continues.....

Boy looks like a 1G in some ways but the date doesn't match up? Don't think it this quite yet but some of the reverse cracks look similar - but not identical.

Definitely not a 1A.

Hey Mitch,
Don't have the coin in hand yet. Once I do, I'll check and post.
Are the pics insufficient to do this? As I look at the pic, it has all of the following. How does one determine the final hub?

C3-Left serif of A in AMERICA cut down so it is further from wing, bottom feather of eagle's right wing squared off and raised.
a-seven tail feathers
b-round breast
c-slanted top arrow feather

Turns out this coin looks like a later stage 24A. Alligator eye not seen in auction pics.

I posted a photo spread at SDP if anyone is interested in looking.

There are other questions. Break to the left of the LIBERTY banner appears to have some displacement. Would this warrant a new listing? There are other breaks as well. Also some star doubling as well and the top flag of the 1 being doubled.

@messydesk please advise on sending in to VSS and thanks....Andy

I don't see anything warranting a new listing if that's what you're wondering. Minor cracks with dubious claims to field displacement have done a lot to muddy the waters of attributing coins. I would probably add a couple pictures to the VW page showing cracks that develop later, since that aren't that visible on the existing photos.
