Post by DarksideVAM » Mon Jan 30, 2023 10:33 pm

I posted this in another forum earlier. Anyone want to guess what PCGS graded it?

I think a 55. I have a 1H at PCGS right now that I broke out of an ANACS holder at MS61. I'm expecting a 62...which means I'll be disappointed.

The heavy obv hair smashing really kills this one IMHO
The rest of the obv is quite clean and bold- reverse looks top au

A au 58 withot that obv hair smashing but my thought lends to AU50
which is lesser of Obv smashing/super weakness IMHO

These are tough to grade from TrueViews with that flat lighting. This die pair tends to have an above-average strike, if I recall. I also keep coming back to the middle row of feathers across the wing looking like they're worn and not just weakly struck. The rims look nice, though, as they would on an uncirculated coin. I'll say AU55-58 but wouldn't be surprised by MS63. If they graded it 60 or 61, that would be puzzling. (Waiting for you to post that it's XF45 now.)

Right on. The TrueView images cast it in a good light for sure, but they don’t add meat to the bone. After examining it in hand I still believe it’s at minimum 50 or 53. It could be an unusually weak strike for that die pair.

I’ve seen much, much worse in 55 holders, but PCGS called it XF45.

Well, if you can get a gold CAC sticker on it, then it'll be worth 64 money (because stickers  ).

You have to be kidding.
That's a hell of a rough grade.
Grader must've been in a bad mood.

Huge difference between Jody's coin and the OP coin, but a big part of that is the strike. Grading 1921 Peace dollars is like grading Buffalo nickels. You have to know what part of the missing detail is wear and what part is strike. Like Buffalo nickels and Walking Liberty halves, 1921 Peace dollars don't have an "official" superlative designation for good strike that offers a convenient way of calling out and pricing these coins differently. To make matters more complex, this comes into play in circulated grades for Buffalo nickels and 1921 Peace dollars, but I digress.

Clearly from the TrueViews of the VAM 1H, XF45 doesn't make sense. My parenthetic comment about waiting to see that it is XF45 was in part a shot at the TrueViews for not giving good information about the coin. If I get a chance to sticker this one, I'll see if I can take a picture that makes the grade make more sense.

Here is my 1921 VAM 1H NGC MS 61 with VSS label .
That's a nice example.
If I get a chance to sticker this one
I'm working on another batch to send you now. :)

Here's another one I have in AU-58 +CAC. It has much more original field surfaces but I rather like the look of the 45 more. The look of the photograph rather.

What are your thoughts after seeing it in hand? Cleaned and net/market graded?
