Part way down the attribution page for 1921-D VAM 1G http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... 1-D_VAM-1G is a photo of strange 'dents' under the denticles above IBU on the obverse, and a note that says:
"George Powell made a cool find in July 2004. Look closely at the holes between the denticles above IBU (and other locations) and notice the field is dented down. Leroy Van Allen called the field "pushed in" and identifies it as die damage. Very unusual!"
Has it been determined yet what these are, and why or how they got there?
Perhaps even more interesting is what SURE looks like tripling of the inner rim above the denticles. I'd love to get some thoughts from @vampicker and/or @messydesk about what this is, and how it could have happened.

When in doubt... don't.
Re: 1921-D VAM 1G: are these still unknown?
I'd just be guessing, and doubt that would be particularly helpful at this point. At a minimum, I'd want to see more examples for some context. Do these occur on other die pairs? In other series?
often the crusher of hopes and dreams
Re: 1921-D VAM 1G: are these still unknown?
Thanks John. I haven't seen them on other die pairs or in other series... just on VAM 1G. But it is on all 3 examples I have.
When in doubt... don't.

Similar to the damaged denticles on the 87-S VAM 2A. Not exactly sure how that would happen, though.
