Lost its marvelous reverse toning. Mistakes like this should not be possible.

Don't know if I'd be happy with the "fair offer":
allowing him to keep the cleaned coin and receive a payment of about 70 per cent of the coin’s insured value plus a full refund for postage and other fees

Seriously?

Another chink in the Emperor's armour.
When in doubt... don't.

Well, we don't know what the coin looked like before it was dipped or what the declared value was. Based on the hazy patch at the lower left reverse, it would seem the toning was black there. Nevertheless, a serious egg-on-face moment for PCGS.

More like Zardoz " the gun is good "

So i have to say, I had to go back and find one of the very first rounds of posts that I had written here . It was one I had to edit and take back what I had written because it was not well received . I accused them of the very same thing . Interesting that the date was in September . I had to take the words back because it went over like a turd in a punch bowl .It makes me feel a little better because I am not as crazy I thought I was . So the big question is, did anyone else send something in for gold shield level grading , that may have had the back come back without the toning they send it in with?

K so I can under stand human error . I don't believe anything nefarious happened in this case. I will guess a rack of boxes got picked up and sent to conservation that were not suppose to . It happens no one is perfect , they were very overworked maybe ... Am I the only one that the conservation vs cleaned situation bothers? If the guy would have dipped it before there is a chance the label after grading may have said cleaned , but if they decided cleaning will not effect a coin , they work their magic and it comes back straight graded???? Who is the bigger fool? The fool or the fools who follows him?

PCGS

Dear Numismatic Enthusiast,

The year 2022 brought many great things for us at PCGS, and we have you to thank for all of this. As we look back on a calendar of tremendous growth for our company, we owe so much of this to the loyalty and trust of collectors around the world, who submitted coins in record numbers and helped the PCGS Collectors Club become one of the largest coin organizations in the United States.

As we proceed through the earliest days of 2023, we celebrate lots of big numbers. We have encapsulated 51.6 million coins, banknotes, tokens, and medals worth a cumulative $51.7 billion over our 37 years of operation. And we’re excited to see nearly 40,000 members build some 155,000 sets encompassing two million coins on the PCGS Set Registry. Meanwhile, all top 20 coins sold in 2022 were in PCGS holders. Among these treasures are a stunning 1821 Capped Head Left Half Eagle graded PCGS PR65CAM commanding $4,620,000 in a Heritage Auctions event, the finest-known 1825/4/1 Half Eagle graded PCGS PR67CAM realizing $4,080,000 at a Stack’s Bowers Galleries sale, and an incredible 2011 25 Bitcoin graded PCGS MS66 fetching $1,102,500 by GreatCollections.

Along with the spectacular figures came the kind of revolutionary product offerings that collectors have come to expect from us, such as our innovative pack holders for banknotes. We also unveiled other concepts for encapsulated coins, including new holders specifically crafted for coins already encased in government packages. Furthermore, our PCGS Mobile Apps have been further improved to make looking up information on and shopping for coins and other collectibles easier than ever – all with the tap of a screen.

The year 2023 brings some minor changes to our pricing structure that have resulted in small increases of some of our fees – something we worked hard to minimize despite the record inflation across the world right now. Production costs and the cost of goods are increasing, but we haven’t increased prices since 2019 and are absorbing much of this pricing pressure to mitigate the impacts on collectors’ pocketbooks. We thank you for your continued support throughout all of the challenges we’ve been through together in recent years and appreciate your recognizing that the best coins end up in PCGS holders, which offer the maximum in security and value for your coins and collectibles.

We are hopeful that 2023 will continue bringing good things to everyone in our hobby. Given the strength and growth of the market, the future looks bright for all of us. Thank you for your loyal patronage, and we look forward to serving you in every way that we can throughout this new year.

Sincerely,

Stephanie Sabin

PCGS President

In the past month I sent a coin back to them due to a mechanical error, better known as: they labeled it wrong. This past year, a coin they DETAILS graded went to another TPG and straight graded. Another TPG rep I caught handling my coins by the surface vs the edges. To say the least, I'm a bit down on the whole industry at the moment.

PCGS customer service reminds me of Lily Tomlin on Saturday Night Live.
She did a fake commercial where she worked for the Phone Company.
Her catch line was "We Don't Care. We don't have to. We're the Phone Company".
That's pretty much the line I've gotten from PCGS.
The clip is pretty funny.
Take a look.
