A couple of FUN show purchases
....and not a Morgan in the bunch
Louisiana Purchase Expo medal from 1904. AA Weinman is the medalist, designer of the Mercury Dime and Walking Liberty Half.
Next is a 1625 Netherlands West Friesland Lion Daalder, there's a possibility this actually circulated in New Amsterdam.
and an old copper or billon piece (depending on reference) from Spain during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella. Burgos mint 4 maravedis struck between 1474-1504

A love Lion Dollars, especially when the strikes are good like this one.
When in doubt... don't.

Re: A couple of FUN show purchases
I bought a Lion Dollar at FUN, as well. I was sitting at John Dannreuther's table showing him one I had bookmarked some time ago on MA-Shops, and he said if I don't buy it, he will, so I bought it. So I didn't actually take possession of it at FUN, rather I ordered it while at FUN. Also West Friesland mint. These were the trade dollars of the 17th century, later supplanted by the Spanish milled dollar. Seller's picture:

Yeozers, gorgeous coins for sure.
I've not attended FUN but I've had my own...

Couple things:
That first one... "Silver Medal"... reckon they were a touch confused there...
Also, I believe I saw an Instagram video of Columbus using that exact coin to purchase the Pinta!!

Re: A couple of FUN show purchases
He'd have needed a bunch of those. 4 maravedis was roughly equivalent to a British half penny

Re: A couple of FUN show purchases
I bought absolutely nothing at the show. It was an enormous exercise in self-control too. Did enjoy seeing others' acquisitions a great deal though. Almost as satisfying? Hmm.

Re: A couple of FUN show purchases
Some neat stuff, especially the lion dollar that nice. I like the beitish midwifery and nursing too. Much in the spirit of the 1797 1 pence and tuppence cartwheels. Incused outer lettering.
I picked a few things-1878 v9 a55 ish, 1878s v114 xf cleaned, 1922v6 pcgs63, and an 1879s st clash that does not match 1j(37a?), 1d, 1f2, or anything else i remember. Unclashed reverse ngc64. And a 1882s wildly concave obverse, ngc64, among things.

Re: A couple of FUN show purchases
I am glad to see others also did well at the show. I picked up a 1934D Peace dollar w/ SPL - PL obverse (the coin is toned, so it is excusable that the dealer missed it), and a Spanish colonial gold coin listed in Numista as only 5 known (mine presumably being #6).
I will post later my experience with the airline in getting to Orlando, but am EXTREMELY glad I went.

Re: A couple of FUN show purchases
The 34-D was an interesting coin, as I remember it being partially PL on the obverse. Left side shiny, right side not so much. Glad to have seen you there!davidkclose wrote: ↑Sun Jan 15, 2023 12:54 pmI am glad to see others also did well at the show. Re: A couple of FUN show purchases
As promised, my experience in getting to FUN:
My original reservation was to leave Chattanooga Wed 1/4/23, with connection in Charlotte, to Orlando. As I was in line to get my boarding pass to Charlotte, I got a notification that the flight from Charlotte to Orlando was cancelled, due to weather. I do understand that this is beyond the control of the airline.
I went home to re-book, and got a flight Jan 5 from Chattanooga to Charlotte, arriving ~12:30 PM, which was uneventful. I was booked on a flight to Orlando, leaving Charlotte ~6:30 PM. That flight was delayed due to not having a full flight crew (due to overbooking the employees?). There was a later flight leaving ~8:30 PM which was cancelled due to mechanical problem with the aircraft. It was my understanding from a retired airline pilot on my flight that it was the same model aircraft. It is still unclear why that flight crew was not utilized for our flight. After multiple further delays and dashed hopes, the remaining passengers (some had already left to make other arrangements), including myself, went to Customer Service to rebook. This was about 12:30 AM on Jan 6. At that time I was planning to return to Chattanooga & forego trying to get to Orlando.
While I was in line, a flight crew came from another concourse, to fly the original aircraft to Orlando, so I able to get there, even if early AM Jan 6. I have nothing but highest compliments to the crew who literally went the extra miles to get us there.
At the show, I found a Chilean colonial piece which Numista says there are only 5 known (mine is now #6?). The dealer is from Spain, so I would have been very unlikely to have ever seen that coin again, at least not at anywhere the price I paid. I also found the 1934D mentioned above. It was the LORD who got me to Orlando, to gift me with the opportunity to purchase those coins.
