10 biggest VAM sales in 2022

Post by DHalladay » Sun Jan 01, 2023 5:56 pm

I closed the book this morning on my VAM sales database additions for 2022 – 8,856 new entries, by far the most I've ever done in one year. (I gather whatever I'm able to find on eBay and various auction sites, plus what people tell me they've bought or sold privately. I only record prices for coins that are identified by the seller or grading company as VAMs, and problem coin sales are very rarely recorded.)

These are the Top 10 prices I saw in 2022:

Incredible numbers. Be interesting to know what was the top ANACS VAM sold?
I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

Do you think the 1893 v2 in a 66 really counts towards the" being a VAM 2 " or just more about a 1893 in a 66? I'm just asking. A standard ms 66 on PCGS is listed for $65,000 .....Absolute Solid Work, by you MR D ... BTW ... I am starting to decode all of this in my feeble little mind and I will credit your efforts with a great portion of that . Thank you !

Year after year, the majority of the highest sales prices have little or nothing to do with the VAMs involved. The 1893 VAM 2 falls into that group in my opinion. But I record anything that's sold with a VAM identification, so the list tends to be swamped with key date coins and/or very high grades.

Thank you for the reply sir . I am beginning to think I am dead serious about the imaginary top 20 VAM of all VAMS list to be complied sometime in 2023 . VAMS that can be poached for 50 to 100 bucks , that then get attributed and come back with pricing north of a grand might find their way on to in the honorable mention list . Because surely there are 20 that carry weight just because they are varieties and not just key dates ?????Of course I cant write it .... It will have to come from the MASTERS with a blessing from the society , and then accepted by the Masses . \Not just us NEVER from the apprentice { HINT HINT}Its just the way this kind of stuff works

Good idea, but that would be detrimental to those of us that are
already doing that. That's where years of research and dedication to
VAMs come in. Just my 2c.....

Do you want it to stay in house , or would you rather already having a substantial head start , make it more mainstream??? . I get it , its a double edge sword , but it seems so much better(to ME anyway } than something Mr Roberts said about before Covid there was talk of the hobby dying ? Once again just asking?

PS even I have skin in the game , I elected not to buy a 1995 W silver Eagle proof in a 70 , the last one i needed , but instead sank that money into Morgan Dollars , so it really should not matter , even if i am the smallest fish in the pond , I love this stuff and MHO y'all are missing a great opportunity by not going public so to speak .

EDIT sorry I can't spell

The big winner is the 1889 23A. Based off no VAM vs that VAM, the coin brought in roughly 628% over common money.
Second place was the Hot Lips at roughly 241 %.

Just think at one time it was just a buck.

Agreed . the 23 A is a no brainier as long as the pop stays low .. Wayne is going to be rich along with the other known examples , if they sell high,,,,,,, hot lips in the best die state is also easy, along with the best thorn head.... I said a while back opinions will vary on some choices but the list seems easy . I just cant be the one who writes it ,,, VH don't hate on me please . I did not come back to the INTERNET to fight with folks I don't even know . I noticed something in the stats for this Forum that maybe only a former administrator of something similar would catch ... you guys hit record amount of guest at one time the other night on DEC 29 2022 ... probably has to do with the 23a or maybe something else that is coming ... WHO KNOWS?????

PCGS only has record of 1 sale of their (8) graded 23A's on their value view....... $100!

PCGS price records that are absurdly low for what they supposedly represent (VAMs) just about always turn out to be generic (non-VAM) coins. :x

In the case of the $100 coin just mentioned, if you click on the link this is the coin it goes to:

Of course I was quoting "P"CGS sarcastically!

Dennis goes way above and beyond with real information. Our coins have a perceived value, until they are sold. Our one friend produces more real data than how many PCGS employees?

If anyone will be lucky enough to discover a 23A and send it into PCGS, they will create a value to charge a percentage for grading... but every coin takes exactly the same effort to grade. And don't you need to suggest to them what VAM you are wanting confirmation and labeled as???

Dennis, you are a champ.

If you want to corral the "value of the VAM," you'll need two coins in identical grades: one with the VAM and one without. The difference in sale price is what someone might pay for the variety.
