A (wild) pick you might be happy with?

First, there is a Paul Harvey 'rest of the story' part to this tale. I'll get to that later.

I'd like to hear from those in the know what they'd feel about finding this unattributed coin on an auction house, putting in a reasonable - but far from 'high' - bid - and winning it.

Would you be happy?

Now here's the rest of the story.

Invoice paid, auction house sent the shipment of coins as I'd won four others in addition to this one. Opened the package excited to see the lot but especially this one...

... only to find a handwritten note on the invoice that said: "Due to a clerking error, lot XX was unable to be sold. You will be refunded cost + premium."

No other explanations.

Coin not included. Amount of that coin refunded.

A rather disappointing twist to the story.

Not wanting to accept the current outcome I've tried a number of times to talk with them directly to find out what kind of 'clerking error' might effect this coin, realizing that, yes, mistakes happen but honestly for this coin?!

Mind began reeling that someone realized what it was and nabbed it or put it off to the side somewhere for a future sale perhaps after it gets attributed - if they don't keep it for themselves.

The upside of the story?? As far as I know it, this coin is still out there awaiting YOU... or me... to find it again...

If one of you find it, can you please think of me and sell it to me for a fair unattributed price (that is, if you nab it for a similar price I did)?

I'm sorry to hear that.
If it were me, I would just blame the clerking error and return all of the coins.
It doesn't help your cause but there are principalities involved.
Let the clerks explain to the consigners why they were returned.
Of course, I can be an asshole.

Was writing at the same time as you were posting the explanation, so I missed what you wrote. That sucks man. Sorry. Would love to know which auction house. I’ve had issues with a couple myself…

If this is a UK auction house, I'm going to guess that nobody there had the slightest interest in the die variety and that the "clerking error" was legitimate and had something to do with book bids being screwed up. Without the error, you might not have won the coin, anyway. A phone call might be enlightening.

This would explain the error and legitimize (legitimise, in the UK) it, but it was a US based company. I'm hesitant to name the company out of pure frustration because I do know errors happen - we're human, afterall. I had a different auction company post the same picture of two different lots I won (not realizing they were the same picture but liking the coin - both 'coins' that is?). They offered to accept the return of the second one that I'd really not seen - nice gesture but I declined because the other coin was nice enought to keep.

Would LOVE a phone call with the company in question but they're not answering. THAT is the part that pisses me off most. Customer service is standing accountable for the issue and explaining it to the customer, right?

Again, best part: It might be out there for one of you to find! Beat me to it and I'll jealously celebrate with you.
