An accidental 'pick

Post by DHalladay » Sat Dec 24, 2022 5:20 pm

I recently bought some unattributed AU 1921-Ds at Great Collections, to see what they were and perhaps add some new photos to the scribbles attribution guide. Much to my delight, one turned out to be an EDS VAM 1X1 – the embryonic stage of the one-of-a-kind (so far) obverse rim cud VAM 1X2. I'm old friends with the owner of that coin and have seen it in person, which makes me even more happy to now have a 1X1. Is it still a 'pick if it fell into my lap just by luck?

My coin has a flashy EDS look. It has almost no cracks, and certainly none at EPL where the cud eventually formed, or under the first 2 left stars and the first 1 in the date where a displaced field break eventually occurred:

The scribbles are clear and bold, identifying the coin as a 1X1:

Gouges/lines from the rim to U and M in UNUM are clear:

The diagonal line at the bottom of the bow opening is bold:

The small dot between the eagle's right wing and body is small indeed, plus there are a lot of polishing lines in the lower wing that don't seem to have been mentioned before:

When in doubt... don't.

Sounds like it was lonely and it picked you!
