1881o vam 50a/33a not
I have a pci64 “vam 50a” that i rexamined and found it not to be. No die scrathes, die cracks, mm placement not a match, and then i found another but sunday. N st position appears to be the same and both show part of the I. Leaf(wreath) clash behind head is prettmuch like the 33a picture. I was told some time ago that my pci coin was a vam 50a and i left it at that. I will have to see if i can get any pictures. My laptop is still gasping it’s last gasp, and my camera is getting pretty ancient. Gonna have to do something about that very soon.

And even though it seems to be a later die state, it has no cracks at all.

Brian, I think yours is VAM-50A. Is there a tiny patch of rust/pittings by 1st L of DOLLAR on yours?
Also, VAM-50A mintmark is higher than VAM-33B. Clashing looks almost identical, but definitely different location. Just compare the clashed marking at back of the hair/cap.

Really racking (wracking?) my memory here, but does your coin have the rim "cudlings"? If memory serves, they are on the obverse and I've never seen a 50a without them...
As far as clash strength goes, the 33b is a completely different animal than 50a...

I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?

no rim "cuddlings, no chip in upper left inside loop of first 8. no rust LL, the cracks and the die scratches don't match. and 33a doesn't exist< i am confused.

Sorry to be so slow but I am knee deep in my other project and not checking here as often as I should
As I have been cautioned over the years by JB and others, with a powerful enough microscope you can find so many things that you drive yourself crazy
There are 27 of these on the web site ranging from VF20 to MS64, so plenty of material http://www.1881o.com/50a.html
The clashes are easy, particularly the one under the eagle's neck
Often the clashes at the hair vary in degree
The other clashes are usually identifiable without too much effort
The two die gouges in the first L of DOLLAR are not always easily identified
I often like to verify these with the die crack analysis, but I found none on mint state coins in my collection

@HawkeEye one of mine has the die gouges at L, the other does not. due to other markers, they are from the same die pair though.
