Brent, my wife asked, "has he checked with his auto and home insurance agent to see if anything is covered?"... and you know how smart she is (husband choice excepted).
When in doubt... don't.

Greatest sympathies for your misfortune, and hope that your coins will be recovered.
My attitude towards criminal behavior of this sort is such that it would not be acceptable to detail the punishment warranted on this forum.

Heres a story that fits perfectly here:

A few yrs back i packed up several hundred Morgans and drove some 300
miles to Tukwila Wa coin show. After working my ass off selling some 10k
i was tired and hungry and decided to head south on 1-5

Entering Tacoma Wa i was starved and saw a hooters off 1-5 and had had
super hot wings at one before. hooters i know, LOL, but didnt even think of legs
and boobs. parked on side where in plain sight restaurant lrge windows.
After eating came out to find my rolling suitcase gone from floorboard and
passenger door jimmied. Devastated natrually i made police report over phone
as phone officer said worst place in Tacoma for smash and grab.

Feeling like total idiot i was useless to do anything except blame myself for
around 25k loss. Two weeks in i get a call from Tacoma Detective asking questions
about suitcase and contents etc. He then says they have my coins, recovered
from a stolen car theft ring and arrested 3 guys. They admitted to coin theft and
told police they had no idea where to fence em.

Wow-Drove 250 mi and recovered every coin. What were chances? 1 in gazzillion.
Learned quite a lesson and also packed heat thereafter, as some thefts have been
by personal attacks etc. Also secured valuables much better at un disclosed
location in future, spending thousands to secure collection. My Fort Knox
Never lived hooters deal down LOL

There are 3 to 4 coin dealers every weekend at the Edmonton Alberta flee market, at the end of one sale a dealer packed up and carried his box of coins to his vehicle, he was pepper sprayed and robbed by a couple of thieves.

Theft at public & private places has always been rampant especially if coins and
bullion are involved. Having a real secure safe is paramount.
Public venues like coin shows, flea mks etc should have extra precautions on place.
More than one person at a sale table, locked displays, and security of some sort assisting
valuables owners while exiting a public venue. Many robberies occur as valuables are
taken to vehicle for removal from sale venue.

A seemingly safe simple day can and does turn into a nightmare very quickly.
Many a dealer has been stolen from or worse, robbed, hurt, or killed by assailant
when attempting to sell valuables in public forum.

Take extra security pre cautions and enjoy as intended

I talked with fogie on the phone yesterday. They were stolen from his vehicle in San Francisco (smashed the windows). He saw them but could not stop them. So they are in the wild and something might surface. They were not involved in the mail. It is a big loss for him and for a project he was doing with them for the hobby.

That sucks , Fogie. I lost only one coin over the years. An 82-O in 65. All I got was the priority envelope sliced open and no coin. I feel blessed thats all I got got f-ed on. I hope for the best results for you. Was it UPS, USPS or another carrier? The USPS people know coins are involved and its 50/50 as to whether its worth the rip-off or not. The same as they do with meds in the mail.

Quite some time ago I posted about a movie I once watched. In it a diamond dealer who traveled the country and carried quite a bit of diamonds made a false floor compartment in his trunk in which he placed the real diamonds. Then on top on the flat floor he placed an identicle case with fakes. He got robbed and the thieves opened the trunk and grabbed the fake case and ran. The real diamonds were safe. One could do a similar thing with coins only make sure you use some lead to make the case weigh correctly. Probably worth the time and trouble especially when carrying back and forth to shows.
