Re: Grade Opinions
63PL? Looks like someone swabbed the portrait with dip and didn't rinse properly.

Re: Grade Opinions
Based on the photos, I'd say 63+ to 64.

Re: Grade Opinions
Some big dings in the fields. 63.
I swear, someday I will learn how to grade Peace Dollars!
Re: Grade Opinions
Wow. This is tough, because I don't care for the color and the patchy obverse toning.
My call is 63PL.
My call is 63PL.
When in doubt... don't.
Re: Grade Opinions
Send it to me and you do not need to worry about it.......64 ish.....
Have a great day!
Re: Grade Opinions
62PL is my guess... Scratches on the cheek in a bad area and the neck is pretty banged up...
It's coming...

Re: Grade Opinions
I would say 63 and at some point in its life a PL or DMPL coin. But I have seen a lot of coins like this that are graded MS and not PL or DMPL because the reflectivity fades with age. The camera brings out the fields though.

Re: Grade Opinions
It looks to be a very nice strike! Don't know what is above the O in OF in the field on the reverse with some dings? Also, the breast has what to appears to be a scratch. Something is going on with the obverse? PL? toning ? not sure, would like to see it in hand myself. A lot of nicks in the field. Over all with the photos, I would say 62PL.
Re: Grade Opinions
Russ & Fellow vam weenies lol ; This is truly a CC with lots going on
Obv field looks PL until you see the regular strike underneath in field Lib is bold enough to 64
but field marks are to numerious so i put at 63 with no PL or dmpl
rev- sure shows black enough fields to go DMPL but fields show many scratches = Details coin
the obv really me as the Pl toning is probally fake????
Im in the ms63 rev dmpl details/cleaned camp
Great /tough coin to grade- thanks Russ

Re: Grade Opinions
Had the original post not been prefaced with "problem free," I would have guessed "details." The polishing lines on the reverse appear to invade the devices (right wreath). As an aside, I place the MM at wide, high, and slanted downward. This die pair does not appear to match any of the documented wide CC die pairs from the 1878-CC_VAMs List.
Re: Grade Opinions
Well here is the grade on this one. My personal feelings are that if this coin is run thought conservation and the fields witch look to be black turn out to be just that. The coin has a solid shot at an MS-64 DMPL as the relief's are extremely free of contact marks and the coin looks to be well struck. The issue on the reverse looks to be a strike thought of something, maybe wood! PL and DMPL fields tend to highlight every contact mark.

Re: Grade Opinions
Just be careful with conservation of a PL coin; my V227.2 64PL horror story be a testament!
