I am curious about the Denticles on the obverse and reverse of this VAM 22A. What causes it or how does it happen?
Thanks in advance!

Re: 1882O Morgan VAM 22a with split denticles
That's been determined to be machine doubling. It happens on several 83-O varieties as well, and moves around from coin to coin.

Thanks messydesk! I had not seen that before.

The odd dented denticles are very common on 1921 S VAM 1BV. Leroy called out the VAM 1BV as " the most severe case of overpolished upper tail feathers that I've seen."

Thanks RogerRock I will check that out! They really are strange looking, I still cannot picture how they are formed. I am used to flat shelf-like MD, this is a new kind of MD for me. It adds a little more to the interest factor for me.
