New 78-S ??
I have looked at this 78-S for q few weeks.
I think it is a new 78-S.
Please look at the photos and give your thoughts and opinions.
There are polish lines in the lower hair, around Phrygian cap, and around the cotton bolls and leaves.
Eagle’s left wing has some small polish lines.
LIBERTY is not doubled, r in trust not broken, broken 4th right star, and engraved wing feather.

Re: New 78-S ??
Love the frustration brought on by the entire 78S series. I'm not an expert but this looks like a VAM-43 variant to me but it doesn't quite match the two dies exactly.
Lots of different die combos for VAM-103, too, as we can't rule in or out any die chip on the E (E PLURI)... Yet, many of those can be ruled out by other PUPs missing.
Without any other PUPs or major changes it'd likely be relegated to the VAM-1 by default?
Can't wait to find out the eventual answer. Thanks for letting me play for a while...

The 78-S was a VAM-17B and I got it from you in August of 2012.

Re: New 78-S ??
I am going to be sending the 78-S to John Baumgart in a few days.
So far seems to have an earlier rev of V-95 with an unknown obverse.
John B and John Roberts will decide the fate of this 78-S.

Sure looks like a V1C/95 Reverse to me. I cant place the obverse to 1C or 95. Is there a goober on the R of America like 1C/95? It sure looks like the B2a Reverse. I hope you get e new listing and not a die 2 of this or that. Its amazing to me that new die pairs are coming to light. I thought the 78S VAMs were played out. Good eye , Lew
Re: New 78-S ??
The "die 2" practice is dead and is actually slowly being undone. If this is new, it gets an actual VAM number of its own.tbconcrete wrote: ↑Thu Oct 06, 2022 12:19 amSure looks like a V1C/95 Reverse to me. I cant place the obverse to 1C or 95. Goober, as Tim called it, is clearly there and what a great new find. Congrats, Lew! Interesting possible re-engraving on the obverse face - she was so young in '78 but already needing a lip job...

Great job, Lew for spotting a known reverse with an unknown obverse.
I look at the plate photos and cant obviously place it as a V95 reverse. It obviously is and shows how different pictures show our Morgan Dollars. A different look from your pictures.. What a great find and should put it in the running for the VOTY in 2022. To find an obviously new 78S VAM is big news.

Re: New 78-S ??
Lew, congratulations on your sharp eye and hunch in determining that something just wasn’t right about the Rev Vam 1C/95. I’ve always need to be re-reminded to flip “it” over because you never know what you will find. This is what a Vam study is all about. Try it sometime, it might open you to a whole new world on what most of us got into studying Vam’s in the first place

Nice, wow I have the same acid etching on feathers but have double liberty. Die pair study is not an easy task, I guess it will just take time. Congrats on new find
