1-pix 1895-S scribbles guide

Post by DHalladay » Fri Sep 23, 2022 8:45 pm

There are 8 different 1895-S VAMs. I lack VAM 6, so the VAM 6A photo below has to do double duty for it. Just imagine the scribbles/polishing lines being bolder, since VAM 6 is an earlier die state. (I wish our posting system allowed bigger photos to be shown, but you'll just have to increase the scale on your monitor. This ganged shot looks fine at 200% of original size).

And just for fun, notice the detail of the 'rings' on the eagle's leg versus the grades of the coins (all by PCGS).
VAM 6A is VF30
VAM 1 (the late die state of VAM 4) is VF35
VAM 1B is XF40
VAM 5 is XF45
VAM 3 is AU50
VAM 4 is AU53
VAM 2 is AU58

DHalliday, Fine photos, great reference material. Is it permitted, and if so, how, may one save those images to home computer?
Refrain from computing the total number of poultry... before the process of incubation has fully materialized.

Go to the 1895-S master page. There's now a link for "scribbles". Large individual photos of each coin are there.
When in doubt... don't.

Thanks, Dennis, although technically these are not scribbles. Scribbles are added by hand to add detail (so far as we can tell), while these are die polishing lines. Still just as useful in determining what die they are, but decidedly different.
