Help with 1882 O MM
Im struggling with this 1882 mint mark and could use some help. There are two lines moving horizontal pointing slightly down to right, I can almost see two marks above them. The closest I can find is a V3 EDS but I don't see the polish lines in ear, there are some very very faint lines but seem to be contrary to the diagnostics. Also over polishing on obverse lower hair and engravers initials. Any suggestions where to look or ideas would be very appreciated

Re: Help with 1882 O MM
Pics lack detail so tough- Not vam 3 as no metal on 45 degree angle with obverse Hair D
i see metal within O mint mark that kinda looks vam 7 but vam 4 not outta question
Vam 4 would have ear die scratches and eagle R wing tip (viewers left) would have raised metal/
scratch from wingtip to reeds very noticible Also a o/s will show rusty die spots on eagle breast
and wings which really helps attrib o/s examples 3 -4-5

Re: Help with 1882 O MM
I know, I have not mastered photos of coins yet lol
I think I got it, it is a Vam 22 the Leroy Van Allen attributed small die break in the wreath leaves near the R in DOLLAR. <100% there and the doubling reverse I somehow missed. Only thing is the eagle wing shows some thinning but no field showing through and the marks in the mint mark. The ear is def pitting. Does anyone have any intel on a Vam 22 that could seal deal

Re: Help with 1882 O MM
I dont specifically see it on liberty but when I hold it on sharp angle, I can see light pitting over most of the cap and in between hair. Does that sound right?
Re: Help with 1882 O MM
Actually across the entire eagle on reverse too!
Re: Help with 1882 O MM
Is the end of the branch above the first L of DOLLAR split? It's pretty much a 'one and done' diagnostic for the DDR associated with VAM 22

Re: Help with 1882 O MM
Perfect, is plainly there. Thanks John
Re: Help with 1882 O MM
oh wait, not sure uuggh lemme look lol
Re: Help with 1882 O MM
It looks split if I look upside down, is it that oval end that your talking about?
Re: Help with 1882 O MM
Humm OK back to the drawing board.
Re: Help with 1882 O MM
Could this be a new Vam, there is def double legend just like the Vam 22? Im getting a bit better with images getting new scope so soon it wont be an issue. With the metal in the MM and reverse doubling Im lost. I plan on sending in for attribution but would like to know before I send it lol. Any thoughts appreciated??
Re: Help with 1882 O MM
Sorry, that is a VAM 22. Your picture of the end on the stem doesn't really capture the split, but I kinda see it. I apologize for the extra day of trying to figure this out

No problem John,
I cant even fathom the knowledge base you all must tap into to maintain such an intricate amount of data. When I think about how Leroy must have woke up with vam dreams (im sure some nightmares too) keeping track of all that information. Im amazed at the early history and how deep the research goes. Im kind of new to vams and when I discovered vamworld I was instantly enthralled. All I can say is WOW and I cant say enough how appreciated all your efforts (JR & everyone involved with maintenance) to not only provide so much information but the efforts to keep it up to date and accurate and most important, to take it to the next level from Leroy. The future IMHO is bright for Vams thanks to all the admins.
I look forward to being a part of the community and hope someday to be able to contribute.

PS I always had trouble seeing doubling but thanks to this post I used different methods and suddenly, able to see them
more clearly. Thanks for the learning experience, again lol
