14.17 sold tonight

Post by keydates » Thu Sep 01, 2022 1:24 am

How many saw the 1878 14.17 at auction tonight?
How many bid?
Was cleaned but still a rear vam.
Anyone want to say they bought it?
I was under bidder

I gotta ask - did you give it a couple more bids because it wasn't attributed?

The bidding stopped before auction at 135.00 plus buyer fee.
It went from that to say 3000.00 fast.
Them I think there was just couple guys bidding at last.
With only 5 seconds to bid it still went fast.
I bid 4000.00 and next bid at 4200.00 plus buying fee I let it go.
5040.00 with buyer fee.

I ask because to me it seems sometimes the truly rare stuff sells for more if it's unattributed. Hard to pick a better 78 variety of any sort, let alone one of the key 8 TF marriages off an auction site without anyone else spotting it.

I'd love to have seen the consignor's reaction!
When in doubt... don't.

Here's the link

(Moved to discussion board, since this was never an active auction at the time it was posted.)

That’s pretty much true nowadays, but , sometimes things still go un-noticed, especially in the ‘bay.

WOW! I learn so much, from this site and reading you posts.
I was lucky enough to have found an 1878 8TF DMPL vam 23, after seeing the doubled lips, on the seller's pictures a
long time ago and won it and I posted pictures of it many years ago.
I didn't know, about this R-7 vam 14.17.
I'm going to find my vam 23 and check for any of the vam 14.17 die markers and check through my box of unattributed
8TF's.
I looked at the auction and I could not see doubling in the lips, that you are talking about or any of the other die markers, from the Heritage enlarged pictures.
I did see the tiny dot, on he back of the ear.
What did you see, that made you know it was the rare vam 14.17?
Thank you, Bert

Look at radial die crack to right of the date at the 1st star; A1C reverse shared with many obverses; coin is PL too, for starters…

Thank you Clayton,
I just got on my old computer, where I had my vam 23 saved and going to post
pictures of it now.
One of my most exciting Morgan finds.

Jim I thought you might have bought it.
So far no one on this site has stepped up and said they saw it for sale.
My question did anyone even see it?

I know probably 3 to 5 might have been bidding.
Just my guess.

Amazingly I bought another 1878 in this auction and didn't even look at this coin since it was cleaned.
