1878 S 1 of 4 "Funky Feather" question

Post by bhinkle » Fri Aug 26, 2022 1:27 pm

I haven't found any vams for a long time.
I was looking at some of the vams, that I had found awhile back.
It is an 1878 S PCGSMS63, that I had labeled as a vam 76.
I was looking at the vam 76 vam tonight and didn't see some of
the die markers on my 1878 S
The metal at the tip of the hair, below the ear.
I also saw some clashing on mine.
I tried to find the 4 "Funky Feather" or the acid treated feather vams,
but I was only able to find the vams 81, 75A and 76.
Here are pictures of mine.
Is there a clashed Funky Feather or the acid treated feather vam?
I hope I can remember how to post my pictures.
I have a lot of pictures, please wait at least an hour to reply, so I can
upload all of them.
Thank you, Bert

Can anyone please tell me if my 1878 S is a vam 76 and if the vam 76 has clashing, like mine?
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you, Bert

My VAM-76 FF has the same clashed marks like yours.

I could be wrong but the die chip by the mouth and your mintmark placement might be VAM 50. Both VAM 50 & 76 have the triple or double eyelid & "R" in trust not broken. Only VAM 50 has die chip by mouth. I would guess VAM 50 but I am no expert. Either way, it is an awesome grade for either VAM.
I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

This is a V-76.
The 76 does not have the "pimples" in the acid treated wing leg area.
Also, the 76 has an area at the lower part of the eagle's right wing that has an acid treated area that is smooth (no pimples).
This wing area has the smoothness like the leg wing area.

The 50 & 76 have the same obverse PUP.
