1878-S VAM-73 - doubled LIBERTY or not?

Post by keilg1 » Wed Aug 24, 2022 7:09 am

I'm confused.

The B2 guide - http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... _Varieties - says the 73 (and 114 for that matter) are in the "4th Star Broken, r in Trust Unbroken" list - lacking a doubled LIBERTY - yet they share the obverse with 107 which is in the "4th Star Broken, r in trust Unbroken with Doubled Liberty" section.

Can't be.

I have a coin with clear and classic 1D1/73 tail feather scratches, with what I believe is the 73 eye spike(s) but with a doubled LIBERTY that looks identical to the picture on the 107 page...

1D page says it lacks the eye spike and mentions die file lines in LIBERTY but no doubling, but I think I see doubling on the 1D1 picture...

Any help from the experts?

Thanks,

Gary

The normative specification for the VAM 73 obverse (II 30) is silent with regard to doubling on LIBERTY. The guide put together on the wiki is an informative interpretation. It would appear that the II 30 obverse die has slight doubling on LIBERTY, so the guide would need to be updated to be consistent. Comments on the VAM page are not part of the specification.

Appreciate the help, @messydesk. Nice to see I'm not completely daft. Yet... still feeling that way can you tell me, then, if this is likely a 73?

Curious, too, if the 1D or the 73 are the more difficult of the two to find - if known?
