i had an 1878 v14.12 that was anacs au58 dmpl. so i cannot see why not as long as the mirrors are not damaged.

Either is has wear on devices or it is uncirculated

Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
I have an ANACS Au58 PL.
I found an example of a NGC AU58 PL Here--> https://www.pcgs.com/auctionprices/item ... 5534512491
There is a PCGS AU58 PL in this population count. --> https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1890-1-pl/7197
I can't seem to find a 55 yet.

How can that be? is it circulated then? How can the surface be PL if it has wear?
Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
I have had a number of pretty rare coins (some were discovery pieces) in AU PL/DMPL grades from NGC mostly but also ANACS. PCGS did lapse and did a few AU prooflike Morgans in the past, but their policy does not allow it now. An AU55|8 (DM)PL can sometimes looks more prooflike than one in MS60-62. A good date for that is 1884-S. You can find a dozen arguable PLs in AU (and they are HARD) for every low-MS PL.
Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
Light wear that results in an AU58 grade can still leave sufficient mirrors in the fields to qualify the coin for a PL designation. I haven't seen a 55PL, if the mirrors are still there, it should be graded PL.

On a AU PL / DMPL Coin the wear is usually really easy to see.

Well I guess, the type of wear is the issue, I just assume AU is a circulated coin, I don't think I'm alone there either, I understand wear from being in a bag and around other coins is still wear but its not circulation in the sense of the word. Really it is the lowest uncirculated grade, that's why we have MS 60 for, uncirculated with WEAR right?

But hey what do I know??? I'm just an old chef who loves VAMS lol
Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
My experience is PCGS will not PL a coin unless it is MS60 or better. NGC will PL high AU coins but not sure about AU55. Not sure on ANACS, perhaps John can lend his insight.
Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
He thinks its a 55PL too, I could understand a 58 or 60. I think there should be a grade to differentiate between wear from other coins in a bag and actual wear from circulated coins in a pocket but I guess there is no real way to tell, except of course mirror fields in tact maybe. I guess I have to leave it to the experts. But I would rather have it raw than an AU55.

Im happy it got a straight grade anyway whew.

When I get time, I'll dig out my NGC AU 55 PL for a photo or two. It is an 1891 o - VAM 15
Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
I have several Au Pl coins in the registry. One is Anacs 1878 - S Vam 10 in AU -58 PL with pictures.
Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
That should be 1880-S Vam 10, not 1878 -S.
Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
Yes I see, I obviously had the wrong interpretation of what an AU coin is. I think many of us new to Morgan's and Vams probably think the same too, so, I need to study up on AU coins. It just seemed like an oxymoron by definition at first LOL I was kind of shocked a little and confused but I think some future clarity from the professionals might help.

Ahhh you were itching to see it anyway lol They are like little works of art.lured_in_again wrote: ↑Wed Aug 10, 2022 6:34 amWhen I get time, I'll dig out my NGC AU 55 PL for a photo or two. It is an 1891 o - VAM 15

I'd liken it to the difference between banging around in a cigar box as 'old stuff' vs being passed from hand to hand in commerce. Mar the surface enough and you really can't/shouldn't call it mint state
often the crusher of hopes and dreams
Re: can an AU55 coin be PROOF LIKE
Here's a link to a raw 1878 v188 that I posted. PCGS called it au58 twice (no p/l) it came back from ANACS au55 P/L.
