Are these scratches contact or cleaning?

Post by demetri » Wed Aug 03, 2022 3:51 am

I took some better pictures of this 1882 o/s Im hoping it is an eds but need some more comments on the surface scratches.

Do these look like contact marks from being on the bottom of a bag?? or is this some type of cleaning. In hand the coin is bright with deep mirrors at least 3" and as usual on some mirrored coins there is a haze in field that slightly impedes reflection, closer look shows these very fine hair lines, they dont seem to be a wipe since many are grouped together, going different ways and rather short strokes but I dont know and need the community help with these marks on surface.

Your thoughts appreciated

Impossible to be sure from the pictures, but they seem to be random, incidental lines and marks from being handled, not a coherent patch of lines from a cleaning. Tilt and turn under a single light and see if there's a patch that suddenly pops out. That's what a TPG will call out as a cleaning.

My reaction is also handling/circulation, not cleaning.
When in doubt... don't.

In hand it looks cloudy and blurs refection a little, I added conservation at Anacs hoping it might clear up a bit. It is bright and really dont look like scratches but haze in hand. If it is pvc damage on top of scratches, the scratches may be more visible. I wish I took more images before sending off to Anacs, uuugggkk the wait is killing me lol

Makes me feel a little better, there are just sooooooo many under close observation. So handling/circulation will lower grade but hopefully not come back cleaned.

When I saw the images with scratches I was horrified because they do not look like scratches to the eye. Vam world and everyone in community make vamming so exciting, I learn more here everyday thanks to JB, JR and Hawkeye. Man they looked like HARSH under dark light uugh and if Im guessing right it may be a v4 eds but Im not that good yet to be positive lol

I have the coin on my desk now and it is in fact a VAM 4 EDS. I straight graded it but we'll have to see what they say in the office. I'm the final word on attributions, but not grades.
Anyway, it's a great find

Through experience, i would have bet 95% it was not a EDS as they
are that rare. I have several in my inventory but over many yrs
searching, etc

A truly great find and super if straight grade holds
In au still worth good money

I just feel privileged to have found one, really I got lucky but sure am happy for Vamworld and all the great people here. Im still new to vams so I feel extra lucky to hold one even. These are coins you usually read about, its not even the money that makes it so exciting, its all the work to hunt and find a vam and be able to attribute it (as best we can lol).
