1878-S VAM-96

Post by fogie » Tue Aug 02, 2022 6:09 pm

1878-S VAM-96 has been removed from the SSDC registry as a duplicate of 1878-S VAM-43. I have "moved" all the coins registered as V-96 to the 1878-S VAM-43.1 slot

I would like to know what made anyone think the 96 and 43 have anything in common.
I don't remember seeing any discussion of this on this discussion forum.
If the move of the 96 to 43 hasn't happened yet please hold off.

I know that mistakes can be made, but who checked the 96 and 43.
For instance:
96 reverse has wind feather not engraved; 43 has engraved wing feather.
96 obverse has die lines in LIB of LIBERTY, 43 do not have the lines.

:(

I agree with Lew; totally different; I pulled my specimen last time there was a question about this die variety!

I can un-kill that one in my database, as if it were never killed. JohnR had sent me a kill list back in March, and this was on it, although tentative.

Looks like crossed wires somewhere. My list had the tentative 1879-S Reverse of 78 VAM 96 as a duplicate of VAM 43. Not the 78-S

I have restored the 1878-S VAM-96 slot back into the SSDC registry. Sorry to say that the coins that were moved from the 96 slot to the 43.1 need to be moved back by the owner as there is no record of which 43.1 need to be returned.

Sorry for my part in this too. When John sent me the revised listings, I missed that it said 78-S instead of 79-S

And just to finish fixing it, 79-S VAM 96 has been killed as was intended.

I see 3 certs in the log that were changed from VAM-96 (index=345) to VAM-43.1 (index=291). Can just identify those certs under a VAM-43.1 look-up and move them back if they are still there. Owners will still need to re-add them into the appropriate sets.

78s v96 should never have been removed. I still have the vam 96 79s and it has die gouges in the lower hair that i have never been seen on vam 43.

Can I borrow it and a VAM 43 during the ANA show so that John R and I can study how they're different?

Here's a shot of the TY from a VAM 43 and Brian's image the same area on the purported VAM 96. Same pattern in the stand of the Y
