Odd rim on 1883-CC GSA Morgan

Post by jtlee321 » Sat Jul 30, 2022 11:58 pm

Hey guys, I just picked up this 1883-CC GSA Morgan from a local shop today. It came with the original box, cert and outer mailing box. It's a stunning coin, one of the things that popped out at me as I was photographing it is the rim. It has a stair step edge going around the edge of the coin. I don't think I've ever seen this on another Morgan.

Can anyone chime in on what may be the cause? I wish I could get a photo of the edge, but it's in a GSA holder.

Here is a better edge shot that shows the notched/stair step look. This edge runs all the way around the coin with even margins.

Actually, that's pretty typical for a Carson City strike. I recall Randy Campbell telling me he could usually tell what mint a Morgan was struck at without looking at the reverse based on the look of the obverse rim. He was usually right.

The two images above are the best I will be able to provide. The coin is still in the GSA holder.

Yeah, I started looking at a lot of '83-CC's on PCGS and it seems a large percentage have this rim. The majority are of this particular VAM. I did see a few where this look is on the reverse instead of the obverse..
