1878s Vam 111

Post by Flat-Chested » Tue Jul 26, 2022 5:32 pm

I like the unbroken 4th stars and the unbroken R's... Picked up my second 1878s Vam-111 on eBay yesterday, was a little surprised at the lack of interest in the coin. Too bad the RIB is doubled.

On Fleabay, coins with little detail seem to draw little attention
The coin you show here has seen many better days natrually
I dont get excited about worn out Morgans, even if a super vam- just me

I don't do the double checking and assessment part of the deal, I leave that to ANACS and JR. Makes life easier, always get a fair grade, proper attribution and coins returned. Seems that 1878s has an abundance of Vams that are almost only available in such poor condition.

4th star looks like point is broken; intact on 111.

I have completed an extensive study of the coin's 4th right star by utilizing the seller's photographs, and have determined that said star is unbroken. The coin is in transit and I await it with gleeful anticipation. Thanking you all for your concern.

Looks like 24,30,or43 reverse to me. That was from memory and a guess from pictures. Star is broken and an engraved wing feather .

I credit much of my success rate in determining the correct attribution to imagination.

Keep us updated with your V111. What is your success rate. I've been doing 78S VAMs for better than 15 years. Im not better than .500 and closer to .300. I have a few 78S VAMs. These guys are trying to help you and not bust your balls. Coin in hand before posting makes us all look smarter than we really are

I credit much of my failure rate in determining the wrong attribution to imagination, At one time I could tell you the VAM or shared reverse die from memory. My knife edge isnt as sharp as it once was.

If anything, it is the 4th "left" star that is broken.

Also, nostril didn’t look overpolished in your photos, but should be…

I guess I deluded myself into thinking that the 4th right star is undamaged, and that the RIB was doubled. Now seeing that the nose is NOT over-polished seals it for me (albeit VAM-111 could have an earlier die stage). Thanking all who pointed out my delusion. I hope to continue to look and learn, this and bird watching are my hobbies.

Coin arrived, 4th star broken, any doubling in RIB likely due to PMD. Very sad day.
