78-S V-86 Die 3

Post by lewisr2 » Sun Jul 24, 2022 9:24 pm

I recently found a raw 1878-S V-86 die 3.
Here is a photo of the horizontal polishing spikes at wing edge below In.
VAMWorld does not have a photo of this attribute.
The VAMWorld description of die 3 says two spikes; it appears to me there may be a short third spike down from the upper spike.

Nice! I see what you mean by the third spike. Looks like a candidate for being poked with a stick to remove some of that brown crud.

Tough coin in any grade; nice find. I just looked at a raw one on hand and agree with three!

The significant attribution of the 86 die 3 is the polishing lines in the tail feathers.

Tough is an understatement …only came across two impaired low grade examples in several years of looking thru 78-s dollars…

What ever caused that is the same thing that happened to the V1G reverse, on the other wing. SF Mint had an engraving whisperer in the first few years.

Yes, the polishing lines on the 86 die 3 and the 1G look very similar.
Here is my 1G die 2.

I've always wondered what tool would cause that. We are talking small gouges on a small die. Excessive grit on a die polishing wheel? I have no clue.
