I'm kinda dense. Please explain how this is a "collar clash" and not a partial out-of-collar strike.
Thanks!

If the reeding is otherwise normal (coin struck fully in collar) and there's additional reeding on the rim, it would be a collar clash, where the hammer die hit the collar die before striking this coin.

In the "die profile," below, you're saying the peripheral face (rim) struck the upper surface of a collar and was "clashed" with it leaving an impression of the cuts used to make the collar. Is that correct?

Where's the pic of the die with the collar clash that was posted a few months back? It's a pretty definitive explanation in a single image

Colwillys, I think I understand what you fellow Vam Gentlemen are talking about. Is this the same thing that's on my 1922s? The rim is angled and is that what makes the (say) groove around the rim. Thanks just trying to understand...

On your coin, the reeds on the edge are visible while viewing the coin from the obverse, but the obverse die is normal. On a collar clash, the impression of the reeds is present on the die (the obverse on the coin shown) and is stamped onto the rim. The picture of the die shown in the thread linked by Unc90o shows what a collar clash looks like on the die.

I'd bet the super collider Roger B posted could also leave some hellacious marks on a coin
