1902 O VAM 67 Privately Made

Post by DurhamJnKY » Sat Jul 16, 2022 4:00 pm

Picked this up from the Bay this week. Pretty sure it's a VAM 67. Has the gouge in the denticles at the neck point and a C3 reverse. Even though it's a higher grade than the other privately made I have, it's hard to see the crack at STATES. (Looks to me to be around VF 40-45.)

One other thing I noticed that it shares with 1900 O VAM 22C1 is the strong dent on the back end of the top arrowhead. I always figured it was PMD but it's present on all the LFCP's for both VAMs and all the 22C1's I have. Now I think it's PMD that was on the coin which was copied. While I'd hesitate to call it diagnostic, it's a lot easier to see than the crack when cherry picking.

Not really sure what that curve is in the denticles next to the R in AMERICA. It's shape matches the lower front of the 2 in the date, but why would it be on the reverse? I'm sure it's not significant. It's just a riddle I'm trying to solve.

Yeah, my example of the V67 has the same "feature" on the top arrow head. Not sure about the other two "features" you mention. My coin is more worn than yours.

Nice new pickup,
I confirmed the arrow ding on 7 examples.
No sign of the denticle oddity,
Thanks for posting, I found 5 new 67s on
the bay during May and June...
I thought it rather odd as it's listed R7.

R numbers were estimates at time of discovery and are not necessarily accurate. They are no longer being assigned to new VAMs.

Thanks for letting me know, that is good information.

While researching a coin I was looking to buy, I saw the note on the 1901 O VAM 60 page, "C3 type reverse with III O mint mark titled slightly to right similar to 1900-O VAM-22C1 counterfeit, but no confirmation of same die or same copied coin." I think that can be confirmed.

When comparing the reverse of the 02 0 VAM 67 and the 00 O VAM 22C1 I can see the dented top arrowhead and dented M in AMERICA on both. Pretty sure they are PMD from the copied coin.

When I look at the 01 O VAM 60, I can see both of these features plus the curve in the denticles next to the R in AMERICA that is shown earlier in this post. I do not have a 01 O VAM 60 that I can look at but all 3 of the coins on the page are of a high enough quality that it is visible.

I think 00 O VAM 22C1, 01 O VAM 60, and 02 O VAM 67 all share the same reverse.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Jonnie

PS Still haven't worked out what caused the curve. Maybe one day. Just not today.

Most likely cause is a hit on the genuine host coin for that fake obverse die
often the crusher of hopes and dreams
