Availability of updates of the encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace dollars

Post by Rich G. » Mon Jun 20, 2022 7:59 pm

Being relatively new to vam I recently purchased the 4th edition of the encyclopedia and began researching my coins. On page 144 I found a match, 1878 P, vam 13 (concave field) . Word for word the description is what I have. Verified by the pic on page 145. Great! I go into both PCGS and NGC and discover that vam 13 is not listed. Skipping from vam 12s to the 14s! Another website that I visited said that my coin didn't exist. Back to the book. On the next page 146 I find another concave coin listing vam 14.4, but all it says is just that, concave field, no details!! What's going on? Why would they include the description in vam 13 and then give an entirely different vam to such a non discription. I thought these coins weren't very common. Also I have seen vams in auctions that are not in the book at all

several vam 13, and vam 11's have been examined< and they were found to be misattributed. i believe the vam 13's were vam 14.4. it's been awhile since we discussed these. a number of coins have been delisted due to improper attributions initially.

The last update to the VAM book was 1991. The number of varieties added and removed from the book in the last 30 years is more than what was in the book then. It's best to follow up with anything to match to the VAM book with a look in VAMWorld to see if anything has changed.
