1888-O help, Blob Line in O

Post by SilverToken » Mon Jun 13, 2022 4:43 pm

A little help on this coin, please. Bought this NGC from image, reflection from this fairly wide yet vertical blob line made O appear narrow, but obviously it is not.

The O is set left and is an NGC-63. The line goes directly down the center, not an edge. It is raised, not a gouge...

Any VAM Ideas?

Hi SilverToken!

I'm pretty new to this, so take my opinion with a grain of salt!

There is little to go on here with just the one photograph. I've looked at it closely and I do see what appears to be a straight line, left of center, from top to bottom inside the O. In enlargements I've done I can't say that I agree with your assertion it is raised... it appears to be flush with the surface to me & looks like surface discoloration. The only real "blob" I see is a bit of gunk toward the bottom inside the opening that matches the stuff scattered elsewhere around the mark. That bit of gunk is the only thing that looks raised to me.

I hope this is beneficial... perhaps others will post as well.

More photos of this coin would be most helpful! ;)

Sincerely,
-Mel

Hi Silver Token,

I hope somebody more knowledgeable posts on this.

I've looked through a bunch of 1888 small O pictures and have seen several marks with similar lines and raised areas. I've attached one photo where it is on the other side of the opening. My speculation is this may be a common characteristic of a punch used to make the O. depending on which way it is held during punching the abberation can be on the right or the left. This may be of no consequence and not even mentioned in the listings.

As I said... maybe somebody else will post.

Wish I could be more helpful.

Sincerely,
-Mel

Thanks for the feedback. I have thought and really reviewed the other aspects of the coin. This coin has taught me to not dial in on one feature, be flexible and look at all 3 sides methodically and carefully.

The 1888-O NGC MS-63 with the blob is............ A VAM 1-D, Pitted and denticle gouges in all their glory.

So now that's straight, does anyone else's 1-D have the the blob in the O?
