Hi jonocha!

Did you look at VAM-17?

Look in the denticles below the first 8.

Sincerely,
-Mel

I believe the "s" in "Trust" is not broken. Your Morgan is covered in some type of residue (glue, varnish, etc....) that is hiding part of the "s" and is surrounding many parts of your Morgan. Also, see it around the date. Need to poke it with a stick.
I may not be the best, but I do not know anyone better.

So is it common to have a Broken S on a 1885-O? or is it something new?

The 's' is irrelevant. Start with the date and the mint mark. Chances are if you were to remove the polish residue around it, the 's' wouldn't look broken, as this is normally a very thin part of the letter.

The "s" is not broken. Do you see the white/milky field around the word "trust" and in other areas? This is not normal and hints that the coin may be covered with a resin or similar. Perhaps soak it to remove the debris. Acetone is safe for silver. I suggest not rubbing or scrubbing the coin.

If it crossed my desk, I'd pass on listing it even if it was pristine. This example is not
often the crusher of hopes and dreams

The mint polished the die when they prepared them. Unfortunately, sometime they polished it a bit too much. The result is some devices got thinner. Compare 85-O VAM-4 vs VAM-1C. Look at the "trust" from the full coin photo. You can definitely see that the VAM-1C is thinner than VAM-4.

So as mentioned by someone else, it's irrelevant. Start with looking closer at the date position and doubling, then combine it with the mint mark position to nail down the VAM#.

Impressive cleanup. The junction between lower and upper half is really narrow. I can't believe I don't have a picture of it or a Morgan out but for a letter to be "broken" it's very obvious. I'll attach what I have in the form of a broken "r". If the "s" is missing something, it could be just wear or PMD flattened it out. If you want to VAM it, it looks to be a far date, normal O. I think VAM 17 is a good start. GL

Given that hubs did break, such as the 'r' shown above, it's entirely possible that the "isthmus" of this s deteriorated on the hub over time, as it starts out very narrow. Nevertheless, it isn't a listable feature and shouldn't be used to guide attribution. VAM 17 looks correct.
