1878-S Vam 1, 54, 61, 67 maybe 91, 85 and 94 need to be reviewed

Post by 78-sLongnock » Wed Jun 08, 2022 3:16 pm

Vam 96 disappeared from the 1878 s SSDC set but has now magically now reappeared in SSDC.
What happened to it?
Any explanation?
The above 78-s Vam 1, 54, 61, 67, (maybe 91), 85, and 94 need to be reviewed to see if they
May need to be put in the ( Believe not exist category). If so, need to be deleted from SSDC, if an example surfaces sometime in the future
Like Vam 10, than it can be reinstated.

What are we going to do about 78-s vam 54, 61, 67, and 94 in SSDC ?
What does the 78-s clan think about these 4?

I took a look - it had not been removed from the registry - only from the set. It is in the set now. As for the POP - I can not help there. It looks like none were ever entered. I do not have one so I cant "get the ball rolling" on this one.

I entered two 96-S a little while ago
I checked the "My Inventory" and they were there.
I then rebuilt the sets and things seem to be okay for my 78-S set.

Agree with the review; a couple appear in the registry; a plea to post photos and for a review to see if attributions are indeed correct.

One of these, the V-67, has had discussion back in 2019 and 2020.
The predominant opinion was that the V-67 and V-104 are the same.
Here are some of my notes from Jan 2020

Introduction
The 78-S VAM-67 was discovered Feb 2002 by Calvin Cherry; no revisions for VAM-67.
Currently (Jan 2020) there are no examples listed in the SSDC registry.
The 78-S VAM-104 was discovered July 2006 by Larry Briggs; no revisions for VAM-104.
Currently (Jan 2020) there are 15 examples listed in the SSDC registry.

78-S submitted to VSS
In mid-2019 there was discussion on the VAMworld forum that suggested that the VAM-67 and the VAM-104 are the same. The discussion was started when John Baumgart put one of his VSS stickers on a 78S that was submitted at a VAM-67.

78-S V-67 is a VAM-104
Several VAM collectors received photos of the VSS VAM-67; they concluded it was a VAM-104.

VAMworld photos
The VAMworld photos for VAM-67 and VAM-104 were checked and it seemed obvious that the photos showed the same characteristics.
The photo that is probably from the discovery VAM-67 is the LVA Plate Photo for the VAM-67.

It is strange that back in 2015 I received a 78-S small white ANACS holder that was attributed as VAM-67.
I was really disappointed in that it was a VAM-104 so I returned the 78-S to the owner

I have 2 1878s v96. Every v67/104 that i have seen has the same obverse/reverse markers. All are vam 67 in my book. V85 was my discovery and was sold to mark kimpton eons ago for a pittance but i have no idea who he sold it to. I do not believe that it is possible for vam 91 to exist. I have seen many v91a up to ultra dmpl obverse and all have the die gougge and others pups.

The census lists two V-91 -- a PCGS 63 and a SEGS 62 PL.
I did not check every 78-S set to see if any of the current set holders have a 91.
The Profile for the 78-S date set shows "Hidden or Unclaimed".
LVA's 78-S Attribution book lists Larry Briggs as discoverer of V-91.

It appears that fogie might have the PCGS MS63.
Larry Briggs may still have the SEGS 62 PL.

Likely the SEGS Pl 62 was lost in the USPS McKechnie snafu.

What is the story of the USPS snafu?

Let's just say that from what I understand, a lot of Briggs' coin were lost in the mail.

Was a list made available of the “lost” coins?

There was a list, but I don't know how available it is/was. There's a remote chance that it was posted to the old VAMWorld, and that I might be able to recover it from there.
Welcome to the VAMWorld 2.0 discussion boards. R.I.P. old VAMWorld.

@fogie VAM 8? well, that surely is interesting. and here i thought this was one of the pieces that i sold to mark kimpton. i have looked at the pictures and wondered about that tripled eyelid. not sure who i talked to about it but i wondered if it was a very well placed and spaced hit. i might see if i can call larry about the v91, and 104.
