Registering finds in the 'wild' versus bought attributed coins?
Prompted by the recent post - viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6543 by @vampicker, that should be lauded and applauded!, as well as the story I shared (viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6541), I am curious to hear opinions from others of the following thought.
The pretext: I live for the hunt. Combing through other peoples' 'stuff' - shoe boxes full of memories, bourse tables with as much junk as treasure, websites that are often creepy in some way I often can't voice or put my finger on, but I feel watched... as if some ancient ghost or demon is lurking around me ready to pounce. Doesn't matter the venue, I'm all in looking to discover what others haven't or can't see.
Similar to Sam and Dean Winchester of the TV series 'Supernatural', if you're familiar with that show.
Which brings me elation, relief and a bit of reprieve when I run across a ghost from the past, face it head on and decide to slay it by buying it and bringing it into my fold, or running away from it screaming at its threat or grandeur.
Now the question: Is there a way, or an appetite, for disclosing what coins were found in the wild, i.e., unattributed or unadvertised as a particular VAM, versus what has been bought previously typed or disclosed as a specific variety but clearly so even if it is a NAOH (not attributed on holder) coin?
Helping statisy a bit of odd motivation for some (if not many?) of us?
Like a 'Top 100 from the Wild' or other list but only including coins we've personally found? They'd need to be eventually verified to not make the experince become the wild wild west, if you will.
Am I alone in this train of potential wild thinking? Is it too much an administrative burden? Should I simply continue hunting quietly as I do? Or does this already exist and I've simply missed it?!
Happy to hear if you support it or not. Not going to keep me from lurking everywhere I can.
Thanks,
Gary

Re: Registering finds in the 'wild' versus bought attributed coins?
Most of mine in the Registry are "NAOH", & nearly all of mine in inventory were found "in the wild".
I am gradually getting the VAM attributions placed on the holder, at least w/ VSS stickers, but I am in no hurry, & have no inclination to pay a TPG to reholder a coin just for attribution.

Probably somewhere between a third and a half of what I hold in sets was 'in the wild'. That percentage goes way up for something like my 78-CC material. I haven't really tracked which was which, but some are obvious. If is attributed on the holder from another service, I bought it that way.

I would say 60% of mine were caught in the wild. This was back when I started in 2008.
Used to be able to find 78-S LNs all the time on ebay or at shows. No longer....

Here's one of the key pieces from my Top 100 set that was definitely purchased attributed and still sort of feels like a cherrypick.

I have no way of telling which of my VAMs was caught in the wild & which came with an attribution. I will say that I have a crap load of each! There are some memorable finds and a great many that came to me misattributed. Most of the coins I get lately are misattributed as I am now looking for more obscure ones.

I like the idea. For me, it's all about the hunt in the wild. For some folks, that may not be possible but that's fine. whatever works. Here is my best pick in the wild. About 1 1/2 years ago, I stopped by the local coin gallery and walked over to the case with the slabbed Morgan Dollars, nothing new there. Next, I walked over to the case with the raw Morgan Dollars and once again, nothing new that I could not live without. Finally, I started to go thru the $30 box of Morgan's and about half way thru... I all most dropped loupe. I just could not believe it, but there it was...staring right at me a 1889-P VAM-23A.
I just could not get out of the coin gallery fast enough. Long story short. My 1889-P VAM-23A graded out MS-62.

I go totally NUTS for WOW! VAMs!! Or is that from WOW! VAMs?
Re: Registering finds in the 'wild' versus bought attributed coins?
I think that opportunity has a lot to do with this discussion. Going to shows or dealers is out of my reach unfortunately, so I do a hybrid where I look for slabbed but unattributed VAMs. When your sole source is the internet slabbed coins avoid a lot of heartaches, but also gives a lot of opportunities.
If gas goes much higher shows may go the way of the Dodo. As it is now it would cost me almost $100 in gas before I bought the first coin.

Re: Registering finds in the 'wild' versus bought attributed coins?
Of my Morgan and Peace dollars, less than 20% are encapsulated by Third Party Graders. Less than 10% of those have an attribution on the holder, and of those most were at my initiation. Maybe 2% of my slabbed coins came with an attribution. And I especially enjoy those that were incorrectly done so. Not because it makes me feel superior, but because I am less critical of myself knowing that others make mistakes too.
