Hello everyone.
JB sparked my interest in the 1879-S with all the work he just did on them.
Please take a look at these LFCPs of my 79-S:
My main interest is in the Rev. at the left star. By tweaking the 'Light' just right I came up with these two close-up photographs of my area of interest:
Could these be photographs of die gouges?
Update photo: From the above photo, I am thinking a Planchet error mimicking a die gouge...probably easy for them to do that!
I have attributed this coin as 1879-S Vam 12.

Re: 1879-S light tweak
For 79-S, start with the date, mint mark, and the leaves opposite the N in ONE.

Re: 1879-S light tweak
I am afraid the acetone may wash my dreams away... I think those gouges are barely on there. I will work on the date first.

Here is date: Mint mark: Leaves across from 'N' in 'ONE':
Re: 1879-S light tweak
Thanks for input!
I am contemplating giving this whole coin the fully submerged acetone bath; but I am also considering a treatment on the coin in just the area of those striations pointed out on this 1879-S pictured above. I have mentioned doing this particle cleaning before on Vamworld; it was not received too well

Have you ever tried this? A little more aggressive than a stick poke but not a change that could risk getting a details grading.
The elusive DC would be nice, but the striations I am attempting to photograph here may not be strong enough to make that list. This is just a knowledge quest.
