1896 O VAM-28B die rotation

Post by Bigbub » Sun May 01, 2022 6:14 pm

I have been looking for this VAM for a while and I just picked up a nice 1896 O VAM-28B, one of the last coins cataloged by Leroy Van Allen and discovered in 2021 by @LateDateMorganGuy. It was a dual discovery, the 28A and 28B and also garnered a revision of the VAM-28.

It is in a nice grade of 58 in an NGC holder. The VAM-28B was listed as an R6, but this grade also suggests that the entire series is available in higher grades. Since this coin is listed with die rust which the VAM-28A does not have, the die progression for the VAMs should then be 28, 28A and 28B.

I don't have a VAM-28A to compare to but I do have a VAM-28. What I noticed when comparing the two is that a slight die rotation on the reverse of about 5 degrees left exists on the VAM-28B, but not on the VAM-28. I posted large photos of the 28B coin on the 1896 O VAM-28B page which removed that rotation, so I thought I would mention that here as a possible additional pick up point. It is a noticeable difference in the attached photos.

Yes, the die progression on this series of sub-VAMs is listed in the correct order. V28-28A-28B. LVA had all 3 examples in hand when he revised the V28 listing for the V28A and V28B. Once you get a V28A in hand, you can see the progression in the die cracks.

I can't check the minor die rotation on the V28A since all 3 coins are at auction houses.
