Hi all!

Once again I'm stumped after going through the list and pics four times. Imagine that!

Once again I'm hopeful somebody wiser than I (that being about everybody here) can help me out. I've looked at this coin until I'm seeing stars. Ha Ha.

This is a doubled date with die chips in all four loop junctions of the 8's. The legend, cotton bolls, ear, and obverse stars are all quite bland and uneventful. There is just a touch of doubling on Ms. Liberty's forehead plus the LI & corner of T in Liberty. The cap is strongly doubled.

It appears to be an S/S variety that doesn't seem to match the others. The left reverse star is doubled, the right tripled. The left wing is doubled down the middle. There are a couple polish/file lines in an unusual place under the arrow shafts below the Eagle's left foot. The letters ONE have some doubling. as does the N of United.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Start with the date and mint mark before looking elsewhere. The S/S is machine doubling, so ignore that. The 882 in the date has legitimate doubling around the tops of the digits and the first 8 looks to have doubling on the inside left surface of the upper loop. That should get you far. The base of the 1 is likely machine doubled.

I suspected the mintmark to be machine doubled as well as one axis of the two reverse stars. The one completely fooled me. I suspected S/S mark because of the line in the lower loop (the first photo was not a good one).

The psychology of vamming is interesting. I find that, as with some other things, my stubborness can be an impediment. When I spot things such as a doubled wing and star or polish/file lines in unusual places I think surely these must be in the listing. This is often not the case. I sometimes pass over the correct identification multiple times. I am finding that if I walk away and return the next day with fresh eyes and mind I'll save much time moving forward. There is something self-reflective and zen about the process of discovering die cracks within ones own mind.

I really appreciate the guidance and assistance I've received here! I try to help others but find I'm beaten to it as so many are eager to help. I'll continue to try though, and hopefully succeed in passing on the blessing.
