1877 Trade Dollar

Nothing fancy but I loved the toning on this coin.

Looks like the C-20 obverse possibly with an unlisted reverse. Or it might have completely eluded my listings. That is always possible with the higher mintage dates, especially Philadelphia ones.

Never know; might get two discoveries before it all gets published. Someone else already found two for me that had snuck past my radar. Another guy found one too.

The 1874 is raw so I want to check it out to confirm its real first but there is a 1874 on PCGS Photograde with the same obverse as my 1874 coming . The reverse strike near the Eagles left foot is weak struck. The holder was really rough so its hard to make out details on the reverse .
That reverse gunk is on the exterior of the holder.

The 1874 I am pretty certain is the I16 obverse of the C-5. There is a tell-tale diagonal die scratch in the denticles (about 4 or 5 of them after the 4). I think this is an earlier pairing of that die though. There are also die scratches in the denticles above Liberty's head. Your reverse looks both interesting and unlisted. I do not believe it was among those listed for 1874 nor a reuse of a listed 1873 reverse nor used in 1875 (only one Type 1 reverse die was used). What is unmistakable are the worm die scratches in the lower denticles. I also look at the left upper serif for the M of AMERICA to discriminate the dies. Also considered reuse of Type 1 proof dies with a dot after FINE. So as long as it is genuine, and it appears to be the case, you probably have an unlisted reverse die at least. The Mint did not record the number of dies prepared for 1874 Philadelphia use. That main mint also, unlike Carson City especially, was not one to reuse dies much, except very notably in proofs.

Got the 77 and 74 today. Ill post the 74 on its own.
77 is stunning in hand. Peach and purple toning with lots of luster.
