1922-D VAM-2A evil mimic - unknown darkside find

Post by keilg1 » Mon Mar 28, 2022 1:27 pm

No offense, but I'm not a fan of the dark side and this coin is why.

I've looked through the B2 break guide as I'm pretty sure this should be found there, but I'm coming up empty.

Closest thing I can find is a 2A http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... 2-D_VAM-2A, but clearly this is not that - well, clearly to me. Only other close one I can find is the 2AQ http://ec2-13-58-222-16.us-east-2.compu ... D_VAM-2AQ based on the cracking through GOD but it deviates substantially once it hits TRVST.

Any help from you dark side afficionados?

Here's some pictures showing the coin in question on the righthand side of the pictures compared to the 2A. Again, lots of similarities but more differences...

First, FCO (sorry for the poor resolution, by my phone and not my Dinolite):

Next will be comparator shots.

Thanks up front,

Gary - The die crack/die break guides are woefully incomplete. Many VAM listings have not been updated into the guides.

VAM 2A1 ..

Tom,
I think his coin is the other one in the post.
Not the 2A1 that he is showing as a comp.
I’m not much help on the Peace dollars.

Thanks, and yes the 2A1 is there as a comparator. The cracking pattern of the coin in question is not likely the 2A1 even though it has many similarities.

For example, the 2A1 goes into the slanted portion of the N (IN) but mine goes through the middle of the G and just below the O; enters into the neck and TRVS in different spots, progresses across the cap and into the Y in different spots...

Thus, I'm calling it a 2A evil mimic because I'm sure it is not that, but I have no idea what it might be!

Thanks, but unfortunately, nope. Perhaps because I didn't share the best pictures, so here are some more. Cracks on the left and right sides of the obverse don't quite align to the 2AA.

For example, the crack through the G is the one that progresses across to the neck, not like the 2AA where the crack through the G ends and a new one begins that then goes to the neck.

The crack on the right through the V of TRVST on mine doesn't hit the verticle line of the V letter like the 2AA does.

And the crack from through the cap is missing on the 2AA but pronounced on mine, and the crack through the Y doesn't begin in the denticle in mine and progresses at a slightly different place across the Y (and is different than the one progressing through the V below - it's the same crack in the 2AA as far as I can see).

Mine also looks like it has a crack from the B rays E and to the R that is not seen in the 2AA?

Hope these help. Thanking you in advance! Definitely a head-scratcher to me.

Gary

Nice way to kill about 30 minutes on a sunny Friday afternoon? Marching through all the varieties on the 22-D B2 reverse page.

Found nothing that I can see that matches the cracking pattern. I'll hold on sending this one in until we get the nod of approval by David C unless one of you Peace(ful) experts can help ID it beforehand.

Thanks in advance and to those helping me with the exploration. Now I know why I stick with Morgans, but I do see the allure of the dark side...

This coin is in my stack of those to be listed, since you posted your coin here, I am happy to give you credit for the discovery.
The listing is to be as follows:

1922D VAM 2CF - Retained cud below Y #2
Die cracks obverse, with raised area cud below Y terminating in radial die crack K3
Unclashed B2 reverse

Here are my photos, I would appreciate help in starting the page.

@davidkclose , thank you for saving my sanity on this. I see the draw to the dark side because of this fun but am unsure if I'll officially join the ranks! Well, not just yet.

Appreciate your help and wishing you well.
