Came across this interesting denticle hit

Looking over a double date 1880-S and noticed this interesting hit in the center arrowhead I thought I’d share. The date is kind of annoying since I thought it was an ears variety when I first picked it up, but appears to just be a crack.

For those of us who have never seen this little item, who do you know it is the edge reeding hit?

I have a similar hit, just not as dramatic or defined. I got drawn into it.

I ran this by Roger and he and I are both scratching our heads. It is a double hit from something and has a crenelated shape, but unless someone can measure it and fit the shape to a coin, it seems unlikely to me that it is bag damage from another coin.

This one might need some thought about other Mint equipment and what might have come in contact with it. There is also the question of just PMD or is it on the die.

It's a bag mark. If you feel differently and are convinced this is in the die itself, I invite you to scour the Heritage Auction archives and find another example that matches this exactly. While this may be an exercise in futility, along the way you may see a number of bag marks from almost every conceivable angle and a few that are double taps like this. It's akin to strike doubling.

I went and did the very thing I suggested you try. Here's an example with several different hits.

Look at the leaves by the NI of UNITED. The crenelated edge of another dollar smacked into the center leaf forming odd lumps. It's a different angle that the subject coin, but it's the same general idea. The HA archive image also has a few typical bag marks to compare the spacing to.

I agree it’s likely reeded edge that has the mimic of a double tap. It’s in an ANACS soapbox, but not a desirable one, so I can crack it for a closer look, but it’s more of just an interesting oddity in my eyes.

When I saw it, I thought denticles, but as I was corrected and looked closer, it couldn’t be that.

I’m not attached to the coin, so if someone wants it for some reason, I can make that happen.
